Position description

IFDC is an independent non-profit organization that combines innovative research, market systems development, and strategic partnerships to identify and scale sustainable soil solutions for improved food security and livelihoods around the world.

DUTIES

This position will play a critically important role in raising IFDC’s external profile, especially in the Washington DC area broader development community. The Manager will also play an important role contributing to the success of IFDC’s overall business development efforts, including leading the development of marketing materials and events. This will require close cooperation and collaboration with multiple other offices and departments. This position is part of the global communication and marketing function including knowledge management (KM) within IFDC, chaired by the corporate communications manager. The “triangle” of strategic communications, corporate communications and KM will function in unison to strengthen the visibility of IFDC externally and internally —all staff are IFDC ambassadors and need guidance by this team. BD communications campaigns need input from the projects which is organized by the global team to assist strategic communications, and the same holds for KM and capturing our learnings and capabilities.

This position reports to the VP Business Development.

The Strategic Communications Manager will be responsible for developing and managing IFDC’s external, client-facing communications strategy to broaden awareness of IFDC successes, results and impact, and target specific audiences. The Manager must be a strategic thinker who can quickly operationalize concepts and ideas and demonstrate natural learning agility and personal flexibility in a fast paced, change-oriented environment. The Manager must be flexible, pragmatic, and able to think creatively to implement activities in a responsive manner.

Duties will include:

  • Manage the external communication of IFDC as part of the global communications team;
  • Design and oversee the implementation of a strategic communications strategy for IFDC;
  • Develop and manage IFDC’s external communications strategy including collaborating with corporate communications colleagues and KM colleagues on creative online and social media components;
  • Lead IFDC efforts to organize, promote, and participate in high profile public relations events;
  • Manage relationships with media;
  • In close collaboration with the Corporate Communications colleagues, the Manager, Strategic Communications may contribute to the reviewing and editing of external communications;
  • In close collaboration with corporate communications and KM colleagues design and develop external capacity statements, learning material and events;
  • Develop innovative communications products;
  • Implement targeted communications strategies for various audiences;
  • Apply new communications tools as appropriate;
  • Conduct interviews with key informants, such as counterparts, stakeholders, project technical staff, Chiefs of Party, and M&E teams to generate new communications materials to tell the IFDC story through different channels;
  • Acting as principal liaison with technical writers and others within IFDC and with partner organizations who may be contributing to proposal development;
  • Support the drafting sections of proposals and business development marketing materials: management plans, corporate capability statements, and personnel inputs for proposals;
  • Lead design meetings with U.S.-based and international partners, including problem and solution workshops, results framework design, and activity design;
  • Represents IFDC at relevant events, webinars and meetings on behalf of the President and Vice President BD.

Qualifications

This position requires creativity and the ability to communicate effectively in order to persuade potential funding sources that IFDC has the capability and realistic plans to achieve development objectives that warrant their investment. This job will require the following:

  • Exceptionally strong ability to communicate both in writing and verbally; superlative writing and editing skills;
  • Ability to conceptualize and present ideas and concepts in various graphic formats to economically convey a large volume of information and to make a strong impression;
  • Familiarity with a wide range of software packages including word processing, document publishing, spreadsheets, graphic design, database management, project management, etc.;
  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in a field relevant to international development and/or at least 10 years of relevant work experience. Knowledge of and/or experience in a developing country context desirable;

DIFFICULTY OF WORK

This position requires knowledge of the development sector, general approaches to strategic communications; donor/funding agency strategies; and familiarity with IFDC’s work. 

RESPONSIBILITY

The successful applicant will be able to work independently, and with minimum supervision and oversight; s/he will be an autonomous highly motivated, self-starter. S/he will demonstrate interpersonal skills such that s/he will be able to autonomously interact with partners, clients and donors, to promote IFDC.
