Free Press Unlimited based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands strongly believes that all people are entitled to have access to unbiased, reliable and timely information. This enables them to assess their own living conditions, influence these and make the right decisions. Press Freedom and Freedom of Information are vital for gathering and spreading reliable, unbiased information. Media plays a crucial role in providing people free and unrestricted access to information that can help them develop and monitor the authorities. We want to make and keep objective news and information available to everyone, especially to people in countries without or with limited (press) freedom.

Now, Free Press Unlimited is looking for a freelance Assistant Facilitator to join our Syria team in implementing the dialogue and peace building programme.
 

Objective of the assignment

In the dialogue and peace building programme we facilitate events and communications that support dialogue and peace-building among media and civil society organisations working on Syria (in Syria and Europe). The programme exists to bring people together. It facilitates meetings between partners, journalists and civil society organisations to discuss different perspectives on how to create journalism on Syrian issues. The position of the Assistant Facilitator is to assist in smooth implementation of dialogue activities, assist with individual and group engagement, report on activities, and manage dialogue training and events. The ideal candidate should have a track record in implementing communication, social-political and/or human right field projects. 
 

Scope of Work

  • Take lead on implementation of the dialogue activities in Syria in close collaboration with the Project Coordinators and Key Experts;

  • Organise/hold meetings with various parties from media and CSOs (online meetings and updates, design meeting agendas, logistics, planning, contracts, hotels etc);

  • Manage development of agreements and activity steps and support with the follow up; 

  • Care for smooth implementation of the programme;

  • Anticipate needs, obstacles, problems and suggest solutions;

  • Consult regularly with the team to make sure all are on the same page and speak with one voice;

  • Write clear and effective meeting notes and follow up on action points – keep an eye on others’ action points to make sure deadlines are met;

  • Write effective quarterly and annual reports on the work done (output and impact level);

  • Monitor and measure progress, results, quality and evaluation of the dialogue activities;

  • Initiate and or participate in evaluation and assessment of progress and review planning;

  • Support with desk research;

  • Act as a liaison between the Dialogue team and the team based at the headquarters;

  • Support with quick translation of documents or during meetings when required.

 

Qualifications

  • Educational background in relevant fields (politics, international relations, human rights, peace and conflict, etc);

  • Experience in project organisation and coordination in communication, social-political and/or human rights field;

  • Excellent communication skills – both oral and written (sensitive, non confrontational, open, clear and punctual);

  • Proficient in Arabic and English; 

  • Can deal within conflict and repressive context and has security sensitivities; 

  • Reporting skills; 

  • Ability to work under pressure and at irregular times (during weekends and across various time zones); 

  • Ability to learn; 

  • Hands-on work mentality; 

  • Solution oriented; 

  • Collaborative/ team worker; 

  • Proactive, and is self-directing; 

  • Strong organisational and time management skills;

  • Experience in project management is a plus. 
     

We offer

A freelance contract starting before the end of September (initially for 6 months with possibility to extend), for three days a week. We offer a dynamic international environment with an NGO fair fee based on MENA region standards. Free Press Unlimited uses fair selection criteria based on equal opportunities.
