Position description

The objective of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is to combat desertification and land degradation, and to mitigate the effects of drought (DLDD) in affected countries around the world, particularly in Africa, through effective action at all levels. Established in 1994, the UNCCD is the sole legally binding international agreement linking environment and development to sustainable land management.

The Global Mechanism (GM) is an institution of the UNCCD, mandated to assist countries in the mobilization of financial resources from the public and private sector for activities that prevent, control or reverse desertification, land degradation and drought.

The Global Mechanism is currently steering several activities related to the Green Great Wall Accelerator.

The Great Green Wall Accelerator, hosted within the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification’s Global Mechanism is coordinating efforts from all GGW stakeholders for a common approach, using a harmonized results management framework and innovative tools to achieve the initiative’s 2030 targets. The accelerator is working in particular close relation with the PAGGW to establish the metrics of this Harmonized framework in order to ensure all countries are using relevant indicators to measure their overall progress for the GGW.

Objective of the consultancy

The purpose of the consultancy is to support the GGW Accelerator Team on coordinating and facilitating these processes with partners at the technical, regional and national levels

Consultant tasks

Under the supervision and guidance of the Great Green Wall Accelerator Monitoring Officers, and the overall supervision of the Senior Project Manager for the Sahel, the consultant will undertake the following tasks:

• Provide support on programme planning and implementation, such as drafting of TORs, briefing notes, concept notes, and talking points, and support to programme coordination between the partners at the technical, regional and country levels.
• Provide support especially in the outreach processes to private sector companies and support the regional coordination of GGW accelerator partnerships

Provide research, writing and communications support on topics related to the Great Green Wall in the broader context for restoration, energy, job creation, value chain investments and migration in the eleven GGW countries.

• Provide support to monitoring, evaluation and reporting, including collection and analysis of data, results monitoring, and contribute to drafting of programme reports, and supporting partner monitoring.
• Assist in preparation and finalization of knowledge resources and background material for internal and external use, including policy briefs and programme documents.
• Support the organization of consultations, conferences, meetings, events and trainings for the GGW Accelerator.
• Provide support to the GGW Accelerator team to write knowledge products, develop a knowledge hub for the GGW in the region and support the GGW team with different tasks and deliverables.

7. Task: Mapping GGW activities and projects in the region to identify strategic partnerships

Contractual terms

This consultancy will be home-based and will include virtual meetings with the team. The services of the selected individual contractor will be required for a period of 6 months starting date as soon as possible. All products resulting from this contractual arrangement are the exclusive property of the UNCCD.

Evaluation criteria

• Master’s degree in gender studies, international development, environmental studies, sustainable development, business management, economics, international affairs, and/or any relevant field directly related to land restoration, women & community economic empowerment.
• Minimum of 2 years of relevant work experiences with a demonstrable ability to undertake research in the area of women’s economic empowerment, preferably in Asia-Pacific.
• Demonstrated knowledge of sustainable development, and the Sahel Region
• Experience working in the Sahel region a big advantage.
• Previous experience with UN agencies an advantage.
• Previous experience with private sector, Civil Society Organizations, African Union, NGOs, European Union, an advantage.
• Excellent command of written English, other UN languages an asset.
• Excellent writing skills. Experience in writing analytic papers and report.
• For this consultancy fluency in English and French language is required. Knowledge of other UN languages is desirable.
