About the Position

We seek to expand our team by hiring a full-time Bilingual Communications Manager with high Spanish-language proficiency. Working in close collaboration with the organization’s executive director and campaigns strategists, this position, preferably based out of Washington, D.C., will be responsible for the day-to-day communications activities. Position available as Contract Position or Full-Time Employment. Candidates must meet legal requirements for either employment OR self-employment in California. These activities will support Azul in augmenting and defining its external presence and building online-to-offline engagement via digital media and organizing strategies. The candidate must be passionate about the ocean environment and those who depend on it.

The Bilingual Communications Manager will be an experienced advocate and well-versed in communications strategy and tactics to support policy solutions. They will work to deepen Azul’s presence in the media and advance its mission at national and state levels where Azul’s work is seen, heard, and felt within the community and targeted toward key decisionmakers. Their ability to pivot and exhibit flexibility in rapidly changing environments while working independently to manage communications projects and related campaigns will be essential.

The role of communications and the intentional use of such strategies has been key to Azul’s success. To ensure access to information by the Latinx communities we work alongside, all of our materials are crafted in English and Spanish – from scratch – with these communities top of mind. We don’t Google translate or rely on auto-translation apps and the individual who assumes this position won’t either. It is vital applicants are fully bilingual and understand the language, cultural nuances, tone(s) and regionalisms to succeed in this job and serve the community and Azul’s conservation goals.

 

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Lead on developing and promoting timely social media content across the organization’s digital platforms and coordinating cross-promotional opportunities with organizational partners and collaborators.
  • Manage content development and creation for Azul’s website 
  • Draft and schedule member emails
  • Prepare weekly and monthly reports on digital and web traffic
  • Monitor SEO and user engagement, suggest content optimization
  • Identify the target audiences and channels (including digital and paid advertising), which are best suited for Azul campaign messages, and segments messaging for the appropriate audience.
  • Manage media relations outreach to include press release drafting, pitching and media/press list curation.
  • Develop a publicity strategy and pitch stories to the press to increase Azul’s presence across multiple media outlets and platforms.
  • Identify high-impact campaign communication moments and flashpoints, including leveraging breaking news online across various platforms.
  • Work with design and animation agencies to produce advocacy communications materials for social media including blogs, short videos, infographics, and other visual assets.
  • Work with the Executive Director to plan campaign communications, including, but not limited to, outreach materials, digital collateral, discussion guides and talking points.
  • Collaborate on a yearly editorial calendar, taking into consideration holidays, advocacy events, legislative agendas, and the political climate.
  • Facilitate Azul communications (respond to queries, get reviews and organize chats and Q&A sessions.
  • Coordinate with Communications agencies and consultants on projects, as needed.

  • Your bilingual fluency is at a professional level; this means you can read, write, edit and converse in Spanish and English with ease and have strong oral and written communications skills
  • You have a deep cultural understanding of the diversity of Latinx communities across the United States and care to foster an inclusive and equitable ocean conservation movement for and with them.
  • You have 3-5 years of Communications, Marketing, Journalism and/or Digital strategies experience.
