DUTIES: Pitches humanitarian issues, personnel, and advocacy concerns to US-based media, including international, national and local media and strategically important outlets; develops and maintain contacts and relationships with international and regional media to create opportunities for keeping the organization in front of the public and key constituencies; participate in planning and implementation of communications department strategies, policies and procedures; plans and implement domestic media strategies and policies; serve as front-line media contact, triage media requests, and facilitate inquiry directly or connect media with staff who have direct knowledge and/or experience with the topic at hand; edit, write, and distribute pitches, press releases, statements, articles and other communications materials in collaboration with the organizations international communications network; develop and maintain contacts and relationships with domestic media representatives in the US and abroad to create opportunities for keeping organization in front of the public and key constituencies; liaise with international communications network colleagues to provide writing and editing support for updates, press releases and other communications materials; develop ideas, opportunities, and draft feature articles, interviews, presentations, op-eds, podcasts, and other communications activities that promote awareness of the field and advocacy work; organize press conference and media briefings in-person and online; confer with the Media Relations Director and other colleagues to review achievements and discuss required changes in goals or objectives resulting from current status and conditions; create content, copy edit, and proof for other publications including the quarterly donor magazine, social media platforms, marketing initiatives, and website; brief and debrief outgoing and returning field volunteers on communications guidelines; prepare spokes people for interviews; prepare talking points for spokespeople when necessary; accompany spokespeople to in-person interviews; facilitate media training workshop for MSF USA field staff; facilitate Exploring Values and Attitudes (EVA) towards abortion workshop for MSF USA staff, in-person and online, present on behalf of the communications department at external information days; create, manage and update communications guidelines for MSF USA field staff. REQUIREMENTS: The position requires a Bachelor’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Media and Public Affairs, Journalism, or a related field plus two (2) years of experience in the job offered or a related occupation. Position also requires demonstrable experience with each of the following: Demonstrable knowledge of international affairs and humanitarian activities including: migration issues in Europe, north Africa, and Central America, women’s health issues particularly related to access to safe abortion care, and significant humanitarian context including Syria and the Sahel region of Africa; Domestic and international media landscapes and engaging with international media contacts including US correspondents based overseas, freelance reporters, local radio and television producers, podcasts; Utilizing social media as a media relations tool, including monitoring breaking news, creating content for social platforms, communicating with media contacts through social media; Generating earned media coverage including pitching stories to media contacts following specific crises, identifying interesting stories to pitch in line with strategic orientations; Media database and media monitoring programs – specifically, advanced knowledge and experience using Cision and Trendkite software platforms to generate specific media lists, media reports, analytics, sentiment analysis, and media landscaping on operational initiatives and planning; Synthesizing complex and sensitive material accurately to produce articles for publication; Demonstrable editorial and copyediting skills including: interviewing subjects from a variety of countries and contexts including medical professionals and former patients, writing stories while protecting patient confidentiality, writing about complex medical issues, writing first person pieces, long form narrative pieces, informative news pieces, press releases, statements, quotes, FAQs, Q&As and copy editing each format, including magazine content; Facilitating and organizing workshops in-person and online; Creating communications guidelines; Experience working in an international setting with people from multiple cultures; Advances functions in Excel, word, adobe acrobat; and Drupal Content Management System.
