About the Position

Taproot is seeking applicants for a Director of Development to oversee three main areas of development:

  • Implementation of Taproot Earth’s development strategy to raise $100 million over 7 years
  • Co-creation and implementation of the REEF Fund for Global Climate Reparations - a $1 billion dollar fundraising campaign
  • Development of a capital campaign for the Underground (our land-based initiative for community-stewardship and practice)

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Refine organizational processes to manage and track the entire development process (prospecting, grantseeking, grant writing, grant reporting, and donor cultivation and recognition)
  • Build a portfolio of individual donors to support Taproot Earth’s work
  • Build a portfolio of corporate donors to support two campaigns: The REEF Fund for Global Climate Reparations and the Underground 
  • Identify new sources of sustainable, non-extractive, and community-aligned sources of revenue
  • Represent Taproot Earth in regional, national, and global partnerships
  • Oversee cultivation and management of donor and member databases
  • Manage Development Coordinator and help hire and manage additional staff, including a Database Administrator
  • Manage consultants who are providing communication and philanthropic research to support long-term campaigns

Additional Information

The Senior Director of Development will report directly to the Strategy Partner at Taproot Earth and will work closely with the Executive Team.  

Schedule

  • This is a full-time position 
  • The position will require significant travel, attending conferences or convenings, and some evening/weekend engagements

Compensation

  • This is a Band B position with a salary of $135,000 - $160,000 per year,

About You

Qualifications & Experience

Ideal candidates will possess: 

  • Experience working with frontline communities who are impacted by extractive economies
  • Experience with multiple fundraising tactics, specifically individual donations, funder organizing, major giving, corporate and institutional giving, and capital campaigns
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the climate justice philanthropic community
  • Demonstrated ability and capacity to seek, develop, and maintain relationships with funders, individual donors, and community funds
  • Demonstrated knowledge of participatory budgeting processes and capacity to support and train others in development practices
  • Familiarity in organizing, facilitation, and supporting collective governance processes
  • Demonstrated ability to work on a team in collective decision-making process
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and offer critical thinking, direction, and processes to address challenges
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a team in ways that support agency, participation, and support a healthy working team
  • Demonstrated knowledge of intersectionality and issues that impact frontline communities (this could include issues surrounding water, energy, land, housing, healthcare, labor, economic justice, anti-carceral, or democracy and human rights)
  • Demonstrated ability to stay on task and focus on emergent strategy
