Position description

Stars and Stripes, the editorially independent daily newspaper and website covering the U.S. military worldwide, is anticipating a Middle East reporter opening to become available soon.

The job is presently located in Kaiserslautern, Germany, which offers easy access to flights from Frankfurt Airport to the Gulf nations and other countries with U.S. bases and training.

This is a challenging and rewarding beat. A given week might include stories on the U.S. Navy’s operations in the Persian Gulf and Iran’s response; the Army in Syria and Iraq; aid in Gaza; and the military relationship with NATO ally Turkey.

The job includes covering commands and service members, but goes beyond that. We’re looking for someone that can spot broader issues and develop them into enterprise stories that resonate with a wide audience. The ideal reporter is adept at cultivating sources and relationships both in person and online, because military officials often don’t volunteer much information. Official U.S. military channels in the region are quieter than in the past as on the record comment is increasingly funneled to Washington.

Knowledge of the military is preferred and proficiency in Arabic, Farsi, Turkish or another regional language is a plus, but not required. Sharp news instincts, interviewing skill and writing ability on tight deadlines are essential.
Benefits for those qualified include a substantial housing and utility stipend, a federal pension, tax-free shopping on U.S. bases and excellent travel opportunities, both for business and leisure. Applicants for the job must be U.S. citizens.
Stars and Stripes is protected under federal law from censorship or news management by military or government officials.
