Org. Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Secretary-General is responsible for the investment of the assets of the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund (UNJSPF). The Secretary-General has delegated this responsibility to the Representative of the Secretary-General for the investment of the assets of the UNJSPF (RSG). The RSG is, in turn, assisted in this function by the Office of Investment Management (OIM). OIM manages approximately $90+ billion multi-asset class, global investment portfolio, about 85% of which is actively managed in-house. Asset classes under management comprise global equities, fixed income, foreign exchange, private equity, real estate, infrastructure, timber and commodities. OIM’s staff are all based in New York but come from over 40 countries. This position is located in the Trade Execution Team within the Global Public Equities Section. The Investment Officer reports to the team lead.
Responsibilities
Under the overall supervision of the Team Lead of the Trade Execution Team, the incumbent will perform the following duties:
- Provide the best trade execution across a range of global equities and other relevant securities such as derivatives by safely, timely, and effectively executing trades;
- Participate in the development of trading strategies by communicating with Investment Officers, Portfolio Assistants, brokers and other counterparties;
- Contribute to the Trade Execution team by working on projects to help in the development, maintenance, and enhancement of the trading platform within the Investments Management Division;
- Execute securities buys and sells authorized by Senior Investment Officers. • Manage orders and trade flow in a logical risk-controlled manner with a high sensitivity to fiduciary responsibilities;
- Monitor trades which Senior Investment Officers place through the Order Management System from execution to settlement by fulfilling instructions from Senior Investment Officers;
- Support the various Equity Investment teams by providing market intelligence and insight, technical analysis, macro strategy, trade ideas and data requests;
- Support the portfolio management process by acting as the broker contact point for primary/secondary offerings, bid-offers, buy/sell ideas, recommendation changes, and major economic and company news. Pro-actively contribute to the investment process by reducing transaction costs and identifying alpha opportunities in global equity markets;
- Create reports to review brokerage execution costs and quality that will be integrated into the broker evaluation process to enhance the Office of Investment Management’s (OIM) accountability and transparency. • Cross-train with other traders to enable flexible trading-desk team coverage;
- Review transactions to ensure accuracy of information and that trades conform to different market regulations; inform management regarding fluctuations and irregularities.
- Ensure trades are in compliance with internal OIM requirements and with rules and regulations in various local market jurisdictions;
- Act as liaison with the Operations team to ensure proper settlement of trades. • Help to reconcile trading discrepancies between Operations and brokers;
- Help the Senior Trade Execution Officer by generating reports that indicate achievement of the Trade Execution team's goals of lowering transaction costs, decreasing slippage, and reducing market impact;
- Work on special ad-hoc projects and perform other duties as required.

Education
- Advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in Business and Administration (MBA), Finance, Economics or related field is required. A first degree level university degree in combination with two additional years of experience in investment management may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. A Chartered Market Technician (CMT) designation is desirable.
Work Experience
- A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience trading and executing Global Equity markets for a large institutional buy-side asset manager or investment firm is required. Experience working with market data and analytics systems such as Bloomberg, Reuters, or similar system is required. Experience executing via an Order Management System such as Charles River, Bloomberg-AIM, Longview or similar system is required. Experience dealing with Operations teams, Custodian Banks, Investment Brokers is required. Experience with Trading Cost Analysis systems such as Abel Noser, Virtu , Bloomberg Trading Cost Analysis (BTCA) or similar system is desirable. Experience with global equity market structures, algorithms, dark pools, and other alternative liquidity sources is desirable.
Languages
- English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
