Position description

The Region of Tuscany together with seven prestigious universities namely the University of Florence, University of Pisa, University of Siena, University for Foreigners of Siena, Scuola IMT Alti Studi of Lucca Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa and Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa, decided to establish a Tuscan Universities Liaison Office to the EU with the aim of promoting the interests of the Tuscan Higher Education sector in Europe.

Particularly, the Liaison Office will:

  •   Provide Intelligence to Tuscan Universities on EU funding opportunities

  •   Encourage collaboration between researchers and other potential partners.

  •   Facilitate stronger relationships between Tuscan Higher Education Institutions, European Institutions and Regional Partners from the EU, and beyond.

The Liaison Office, registered as a Belgian AISBL, is also a fundamental point of reference for the policies of trans-national mobility and cooperation in support of qualified university training programs and research, which is one of the priorities of the Regional Administration of Tuscany. 

The Tuscan Universities Liaison Office to the EU is looking for a Senior EU Public Affairs Manager- Project Coordinator with a +5 years’ experience in EU policies, public relations and a particular focus on Research&Innovation EU projects.

The EU Public Affairs Manager-Project Coordinator key activities include building networks and fostering relations between Tuscan Universities and EU Institutions and other key actors, such as other EU Universities or Regional partners. He/She will gain maximum benefit from H2020 and FP9 to secure funding and support for Tuscan Universities.

Main tasks

  •   Representing Tuscan Universities at EU level, in strong coordination with the Tuscan Liaison Office to the EU that has been existing since 1999.

  •   Promote and help in drafting a common research path, compatible with the EU policies, for the Tuscan universities, in order to create a mechanism that will promote partnership and stimulate joint research proposals.

  •   Building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, in particular EU Institutions, agencies and other relevant partners.

  •   Building and maintaining relationships with other EU Universities and Research Institutions for implementing common research projects.

  •   Representing the interests of Tuscan universities towards all stakeholders at European level.

  •   Monitoring of relevant EU regulatory policies and lead the development of positions on technical issues related to Research & Innovation, particularly on H2020 and FP9.

  •   Ensure dissemination of information on future EU calls and opportunities.

  •   Coordinating the drafting of EU projects, ensuring their delivering scope and budget and evaluating their result. 
  •   Facilitating communication among the Universities and between the Universities and the Region of Tuscany.

  •   Offering day-to-day support to Tuscan Rectors, or their Delegates, and to the Tuscan Regional Director in charge of Research.

  •   Participating in EU level networks, working groups and platforms on behalf of Tuscan Universities and eventually of the Region of Tuscany.

  •   Representing Tuscan universities strategic interests at different networking events;

  •   Monitoring all suitable EU innovation actions.

  •   Facilitating the link between Tuscan Universities and business in line with the Regional Smart Specialisation Strategy (S3) and new priorities of FP9 


Applicant should meet the following requirements:

  •   University MA degree; PhD will be a plus;

  •   Proven experience (over 5 years of experience) in EU affairs, particularly EU legislation and funding programs related to R&I;

  •   Excellent knowledge of the EU Institutions and their functioning and good network of contacts in the Brussels arena;

  •   Good knowledge of project management and accounting;

  •   Very good writing, communication and presentation skills;

  •   Self-starter and strong team player, quality and result oriented and willing to work in an international environment;

  •   Good Knowledge of the Italian or the Tuscan University System is an asset


  •   Excellent Italian speaker level (oral and written)

  •   Excellent written and spoken English and good knowledge of at least 1 other language, preferably French.

  •   Communication skills (written and oral).

  •   Availability to travel monthly between Tuscany and Brussels.
