Position description

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international humanitarian organization that delivers impartial medical care to people affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion from health care in over 70 countries.

We welcome candidates who bring a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences to join us in working toward MSF’s common mission.

Our dynamic Development Department is responsible for raising over $400 million annually in funds in order to meet the financial needs of our organization. The Development Department includes five teams (Marketing, Foundations, Corporations, Private Major Donors and Planned Giving, and Fundraising Operations and Systems) with almost 60 staff.

The Communications Department is responsible for informing the public about the organization’s medical humanitarian work, raising awareness about the challenges facing people living in conflict or crisis situations, and advocating for the needs of our patients. The Communications Department includes three teams (Editorial, Media Relations, and Events) with 16 staff.

Are you a thoughtful and precise editor who wants to use your talents to inspire support for lifesaving medical care? Do you understand the art and craft of storytelling, and enjoy collaborating with colleagues to shape powerful narratives?

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) seeks an Associate Editor for Fundraising who will apply their strong editorial, copywriting, and interpersonal skills to ensuring digital and print communications that get results. You will primarily focus on fundraising communications that will galvanize readers to donate, engage, and act.

Your work is journalistically sound but not dry. You can succinctly describe MSF’s activities and the stories of patients and staff with accuracy and empathy. You understand the importance of getting current and potential supporters excited about the work of MSF. In this cross-functional role, you will collaborate with the Development and Communications teams to edit creative content produced by staff, agencies, and freelancers and ensure it is clear, compelling, on-brand, and on-message. You are eager to help produce quality storytelling and marketing campaigns that motivate people to support MSF’s medical humanitarian work around the world.

The Associate Editor for Fundraising will use their excellent editing, writing, and research skills to help produce stellar content for MSF-USA’s Development Department, while working within the Communications team. Their editing and writing will inspire donations from private donors across the country, including individuals, corporations, and foundations.

They will collaborate with internal staff and external agencies to ensure the quality, readability, and effectiveness of digital and print fundraising materials, including web content, social media ads, brochures, letters, videos, email, direct mail, and other products. As a member of the Editorial team dedicated to supporting our fundraising teams, they will play a crucial role in our goals of increasing revenue, website traffic, and engagement across channels. This person may not have direct reports, but will be acting in a managerial/supervisory capacity. They will work with the Editorial team to ensure that all fundraising materials are well-composed, factually correct, and in keeping with MSF’s distinct voice and brand. This person will play a vital, cross-functional role to ensure message alignment and support shared campaigns as we seek to raise over $400 million this year and beyond.
