Position description

New America is seeking a program assistant interested in pursuing a career in education and workforce development policy. The program assistant will support a variety of projects and senior staff at New America's Center on Education and Labor (CELNA). New America is a public policy institute that invests in new thinkers and new ideas to address the next generation of challenges facing the United States. We engage in longer-term research and react to the policy issues of the day. The ideal candidate is intellectually curious, entrepreneurial, and able to help form new ideas in policy. The analyst should possess a belief in evidence-based analysis, removed from partisan or ideological frameworks.

The Center on Education and Labor is dedicated to restoring the link between education and economic mobility through policies that strengthen the key social institutions necessary to connect them – public education and job training, labor protections, and worker organizations. The Center’s work spans the policy domains of education, labor, and workforce development and seeks to connect them in ways that enhance economic mobility and reduce inequality. Our goal is to forge a more holistic approach to the challenges generated from technological change - an approach that recognizes the need to equip workers of the future with the knowledge, skills, and power necessary to fulfill the terms of our social contract. 

Center staff author blog posts, op-eds, and policy papers using original research and analysis. They also convene stakeholders around policy development opportunities and organize events designed to engage and education the public. CELNA Staff also provide technical assistance to policymakers, journalists, and education and workforce leaders across the U.S., and aim to shape how policymakers and the media understand the complex relationship between higher education, vocational education, workforce development, and labor policy and practice.

The program assistant must have strong administrative, organizational, and communication skills. Candidates should be diligent, highly-organized, and bring a customer-focused approach to supporting a diverse team of program leaders who are working to improve educational opportunities for all Americans. Candidate is expected to ultimately be located full-time in Washington, DC.

 Job duties include:

  • Supporting and managing communication across the CELNA team and with external national partner organizations
  • Liaising with New America central services, including the finance and grants management team, to manage grants and contracts with external and internal partners. 
  • Scheduling meetings and phone calls for CELNA management team
  • Booking and coordinating travel arrangements for CELNA management team
  • Supporting planning and production of external events as needed
  • Managing expense reimbursements for management team
  • Management of internal program events e.g. staff meetings, catering
  • Providing research support to CELNA staff in support of key projects
  • Organizing internal financial report information flow 
  • Updating databases used to manage production, development, documents, etc.
