Overview of the Role

The Atlantic Council is seeking a talented, dynamic, and entrepreneurial professional to join the Development team. This position is responsible for fostering robust relationships, spearheading initiatives to achieve revenue goals, and driving strategic corporate and foundation partnerships.

The Director will support the development and implementation of a comprehensive cross funding stream strategy in collaboration with the Vice President, Strategic Initiatives and Partnerships, the Executive Office, and the 16 programs and centers, to grow new partnerships and to mature existing relationships with foundations and corporations.

A successful candidate will have experience in fundraising and/or business development in a dynamic team environment. Specific experience working across sectors (energy and environment, technology, defense, finance, etc.) and regions (Europe, Latin America, Africa, etc.) is required. An established network of foundation contacts and a deep understanding of foundation think tank funding priorities are essential. Candidates must have excellent proposal development, project management, and communication skills with a solid understanding of corporate and foundation relationship management. The ideal candidate will have an interest and experience in international affairs and foreign policy and be able to navigate a fluid, innovative environment with diplomacy and ease.

This position will focus 70% of the time on foundation partnerships and 30% of the time on corporate partnerships. This position requires a high degree of foundation expertise and innerworkings of present and future funding priorities.

This is a full-time position based in our Washington, DC headquarters with a hybrid work schedule (as agreed upon by Supervisor). Pay is commensurate with experience, education, and organizational equity, with a salary range of $150,000 – $180,000 per year.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead in creating a portfolio of strategic, high value corporate and foundation sector partners.
  • In close coordination with programs and centers, manage the development, growth, stewardship, support, and renewal activities related to key corporate and foundation partnerships, meeting or exceeding established annual goals.
  • Supervise and mentor a team of 4-6 business development professionals with varied portfolios serving as a thought partner in their work and finding efficiencies in work product, proposals, and processes.
  • Meet and work to grow team goals:
    • Corporate team goal: $8M
    • Foundation team goal: $12M
    • Individual goal: $4M
  • Represent the Council at domestic and international conferences events, forums, and meetings, advocating for its objectives and building the organization's visibility within the assigned portfolio area.
  • Collaborate directly with programs and centers to understand their goals and translate that work into strong value propositions for prospective corporate partners.
  • Communicate effectively, both internally and externally, to ensure strong business development coordination amongst programs and centers.
  • Identify new opportunities for revenue generation, programmatic partnerships, sponsorship, and strategic corporate alliances to drive growth.
  • Develop, nurture, and secure revenue opportunities.
  • Report and inform management on pipeline performance.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with industry stakeholders, including member companies, key partners, and relevant institutions.
  • Support the Vice President with strategy development, performance management, and financial oversight.
  • Collaborate with the engagement team to create compelling messaging and materials to promote the association's initiatives, events, and value propositions.
  • Develop and maintain high-quality, accurate, and responsive proposals aligned with Atlantic Council’s research priorities and donor guidelines. Ensure they are approved for submission, compliant with the Council’s policies, and submitted to prospective partners in advance of deadlines.
  • Create annual stewardship plans for current, lapsed, and prospective corporate partners.
  • Maintain complete records on assigned relationships, results, and campaign activities using analytical tools.

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in development, business development, marketing or related fields.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience working with corporate and foundation partnerships.
  • Minimum of 5 years managing a team, budgets, and revenue goals.
  • Self-starter and results-oriented individual who can meet tight deadlines and work in fluid, dynamic, and evolving environment.
  • Excellent communication and presentation Demonstrated ability to negotiate, interpret and fulfill terms of a partnership agreement.
  • Willingness to learn, lead, and act.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including tact, flexibility, professionalism, and
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PPT) required; experience with Salesforce or other CRM preferred.
  • Experience using Adobe InDesign and/or Acrobat to edit documents preferred.
