Position description is a user’s guide to the news produced by the beat reporters, subject-matter experts, and editors who know it best. And we’re looking for an associate editor who can help shape and direct our coverage of foreign and national security issues and help manage a growing team of reporters.

The ideal candidate would be able to provide substantive edits to breaking news stories on topics ranging from Washington's standoff with North Korea to the latest developments in the Trump/Russia scandal. They would also be able to work with reporters to generate ideas for short- and long-term features, and then help shepherd them onto the site.

This is an important editing job in the newsroom and will involve editing a wide variety of short and long posts on some of the biggest and most important news stories of the day. It will also involve helping to manage a growing team of reporters and interfacing with Vox’s video, graphics, and podcast departments. This is a full-time position with benefits.

If you have…

  • A strong interest in national security and foreign policy issues.
  • The ability to move breaking stories quickly while juggling the edits of features at various stages of completion.
  • At least three years of experience editing foreign policy or national security articles.
  • The ability to help Vox staffers grow as both reporters and editors, and to develop their own voices as writers.
  • Ideas for commissioning new and unique freelance pieces, running the gamut from articles  to photo packages.

… you may be the editor we’re looking for!

Application instructions

Please submit a resume, a cover letter, and three clips (links in your cover letter, or in the same document as your cover letter).

In your cover letter, include three ideas for foreign stories that you think deserved coverage but didn’t get much attention in American media, and explain how you would have covered them at Vox.
