How do you tell some of the world’s most important investigative news stories on Twitter, Reddit, Instagram, Whatsapp and other social platforms?

What videos would you create to tell a yearlong investigation that involves reporters from more countries than you’ve ever heard of speaking in languages you don’t understand?

If these questions have sparked an explosion of ideas inside your mind: you are the person for us.

ICIJ is hiring a social media wizard who understands the latest trends, memes, and knows all about the egg’s world record. Why? We want our stories to reach everyone, in different formats and we want fresh eyes to help us do that.

Who are we looking for?

You have to be passionate about social media. You need to know the latest trends, the last thing Zuckerberg put out on Facebook and be the person who tells the rest of the ICIJ team – who are hunkered down on investigations – everything that’s happening online.

You need to have a passion for storytelling. We tell big, complex, sometimes mind-blowing stories at ICIJ. This isn’t easy on social platforms: but it is a lot of fun.

You should be able to work with video. Video is a huge part of social media, and we want you to help us get better at it. You will work with our in-house video producer to help take long-form videos and make them digestible for social. You’ll also get the chance to do some platform specific original reporting.

You should be independent, but also able to work in a team. ICIJ is all about collaboration: so you need to be an excellent communicator, effective collaborator and willing to work with colleagues and partners in different time zones, departments and languages (this might mean meetings at odd times of the day).

Look, we’re not Buzzfeed. But we are an intelligent newsroom that wants to tell stories in new and exciting ways. Our small D.C. newsroom works with a global team of top-notch investigative reporters.

Let’s be upfront: this isn’t an investigative reporting position. But there will be opportunities to write, and work closely with our reporters in a variety of ways. And we will help you build your skills and work with you to progress your career.

You will be helping to mold the future of ICIJ. We want your ideas – the crazier the better – to help us make our important journalism even more successful.


  • Your main priority will be managing ICIJ’s social media channels: Reddit, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn.

  • You will develop ICIJ’s style and voice on social media – this means designing and creating quote cards, videos and other content to engage with our readers.

  • You will be responsible for understanding the success, and failures, of our investigations and stories on social media – and helping translate that for the broader newsroom.

  • You will be responsible for developing and creating all video for social channels.

  • You will be expected to help develop social-focused story ideas for our global investigations, and generally pitch in with whatever skills you have for our investigative work (our projects are all-hands-on-deck affairs!).


  • You will help mold the future of ICIJ’s engagement and social strategies (this means helping create content that will feature in news outlets around the world, as well as our own)

  • Your idea for a great meme, engagement strategy, Facebook video, YouTube channel or Whatsapp group… you get the idea… will be welcomed. We want to try new things, and experiment with new tools!

  • You can work alongside our web developers and data analysts to help create engaging content to highlight the data-driven aspects of ICIJ’s investigations.



  • Newsroom experience – especially digital

  • You must have initiative and be a self-starter who knows how news is distributed, consumed and understood around the world.

  • Understanding of social media platforms and engagement tools, as well as experience using analytics tools (CrowdTangle, Google Analytics, etc) to track the success of your work

  • Strong writing abilities and excellent communication skills

  • Good organizational and project management skills

  • Sound news judgment

  • Good sense of humor, consideration for others, and a passion for journalism


  • Familiarity with multimedia production – images, audio/video editing, design work (using Adobe products)

  • Previous experience working with a Content Management System, such as Wordpress, to edit a website

  • Familiarity with AP style

This position will be based in ICIJ’s Washington, D.C. office. Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S.
