Temporary Project Assistant: Democratic Governance Team

Only candidates currently residing in Maryland, Virginia, Oregon, California, Illinois or Washington, D.C. will be considered for this opportunity.

The National Democratic Institute is currently seeking applicants for one full-time project assistant to work with its Democratic Governance team beginning June 1, 2021. The Governance team serves as the Institute's resource and adviser for executive, parliamentary and subnational government programs and leads on the cross-cutting themes of political integrity and democracy 'delivering' on development outcomes. Project assistants are given substantive responsibilities, and are expected to be professional contributors to the Governance team's work. Project assistants must be able to take on projects on their own and deal well with tight deadlines. They also need to know when to seek guidance before proceeding. Project assistants are hired for three-month terms. Depending on Governance team needs and resources, project assistants may be able to extend once for an additional three months. Though this position will be virtual initially, the candidate should be available to work from NDI's Washington, DC office once COVID-19 health and safety conditions allow.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assist with logistical arrangements for virtual delegations and international conferences, which may include virtual interaction with public officials and VIPs
  • Draft correspondence to external organizations and contacts
  • Conduct desk research and literature reviews
  • Draft social media posts, webstories, and other public communications, and contribute to Governance team maintenance of social media accounts
  • Update virtual database of experts and trainers
  • Update virtual files on countries/programs
  • Conduct special projects as needed
  • Provide administrative support to the Governance team with duties such as scheduling, drafting contracts, and electronic filing
  • Record minutes/notes of in-house meetings and draft summary memos
  • Support website maintenance and updates, as directed by team and program staff

Required Skills:

  • Undergraduate degree in development studies, public policy, international affairs, political science, economics, or a related field; or equivalent experience
  • Ability to interact effectively with all levels of staff, US and foreign government personnel, foreign dignitaries, and NGO community
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness and ability to solve problems creatively
  • Excellent writing skills, specifically the ability to analyze large amounts of information and succinctly summarize
  • Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail
  • Good oral and written communication skills to present information effectively and respond to questions
  • Capacity to work both independently and as a member of a team
  • Working knowledge of PC-based word processing and spreadsheet applications
  • Working knowledge of basic budget and accounting procedures

Desired Skills:

  • Foreign-language skills
  • Experience with event planning
  • Familiarity with USG grant programs, regulations, visa processes, etc.
  • Exposure to legislative processes
  • Demonstrated interest in digital media and governance innovation
  • Graphic-design and/or multimedia production
  • Experience with budgeting and accounting procedures
  • Experience with Google Apps (Gmail, Calendar, Google Drive, G+, etc.)
