Position description

The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking highly-qualified candidates for the position of Associate in its London office to provide assistance to the team. The London office serves as an important base for HRW’s development, fundraising, and outreach activities in the UK. This position is full-time at 40 hours per week and requires availability to work occasional night and weekend events. The Associate reports to the Manager within the Development and Outreach team, based in London.

Due to COVID-19, many of our global offices are currently closed or operating in reduced capacities. The successful candidate may be required to work remotely initially or if local requirements mandate it. We recognize that this moment, during the pandemic, is a uniquely difficult time for most people, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.

Responsibilities:

1. Provide administrative support to the team, including scheduling, preparing for and taking minutes at meetings, preparing agendas and background materials, responding to inquiries, recording and processing divisional finances, processing mail, and making travel arrangements; 
2. Assist with prospect and donor cultivation and stewardship with the supporter community by coordinating correspondence, contacting donors, scheduling and preparing for donor meetings, tracking communication, and preparing donor/prospect research and meeting briefings; 
3. Assist with the organization and coordination of logistics and event support for in-person and online events such as annual dinners, receptions, committee meetings, briefings, and other events throughout the year by coordinating vendors, timelines, invitations, RSVPs, event materials, venue details, and tracking of event costs and revenue; 
4. Manage the administration of all gifts, including processing, tracking and acknowledging gifts using HRW’s Salesforce database as well as regularly updating the Development and Outreach team;
5. Manage and maintain the UK universe of donors and prospects within HRW’s Salesforce database including updating records and information, generating financial reports, lists and queries, optimizing data collection, ensuring the integrity and confidentiality of the data, and overseeing data adherence to the General Data Protection Regulation;
6. Identify opportunities for improvement and optimization of the use of Salesforce database and other systems, tools and processes for the Development and Outreach team in London; 
7. Together with the Director, manage all aspects of income and revenue generation for Development and Outreach in London, including tracking and recording leadership gifts and leadership prospects as well as regular reporting on income generation, capturing and analyzing revenue for events and donations; 
8. Together with the Director, manage all aspects of the London Development and Outreach expense budget including tracking and monitoring of expenses; 
9. Support the annual Gift Aid audit and submission to HM Revenue and Customs; 
10. Support and monitor communications with the Finance Division on all queries relating to gifts; 
11. Prepare, draft, edit, format and/or distribute correspondence, documents and other materials, including web content for the UK website, event registration pages, the regular HRW London community newsletter (using online software such as Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Engaging Networks and Mailchimp) and other relevant social media content.
12. Carry out other duties as required.

Qualifications

Education: A bachelor’s degree in international relations, social sciences, communications/marketing, or a related field is required.

Experience: A minimum of one year of relevant work experience is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail are required.
2. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required. 
3. Experience with Salesforce or other CRM/donor database software is preferred. 
4. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with a variety of audiences, including donors, are required. 
5. Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously is required. 
6. Self-motivation and the ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team with staff in multiple locations globally is required. 
7. Strong analytical skills and the natural curiosity and creativity needed to conduct online research are required.
8. Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions is required.
9. Experience and creative instincts with web design and graphic design are desirable. 
10. Proficiency in computer programs including MS Office applications is required. 
11. Experience with project management, event planning, community engagement, and/or philanthropy is preferred.
12. Strong interest in human rights is desirable.
