This position is located in the News Section I, News and Content Branch of the News and Media Division, Department of Global Communications. The Section produces daily news and feature stories, magazine programmes, and multi-media pieces for the UN News digital platform, incorporating audio and video elements, as well as social media content. It serves as the news agency of the UN system worldwide covering stories from the field, meetings of principal UN bodies, campaigns, events and activities. Overall, UN News delivers content in nine languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Spanish, Russian, Portuguese, Kiswahili and Hindi). The incumbent reports to the Deputy Director of the News and Content Branch (NCB).
Within delegated authority, the Chief of Section will be responsible for the following:
• Provides guidance on the scope and conceptual development of the Section’s work, which includes English, French, Hindi and Spanish News units, ensuring high quality products and an audience-focused approach. Introduces new technological and digital innovations to present multilingual content in creative ways and across multiple platforms, especially with media and other key audiences in mind
• Plans and oversees the management of activities undertaken by the Section, including editorial oversight and continuous development of the UN News website and all related multimedia products, features and services, and updating the Secretary-General’s website and other webpages as needed. Ensures the timeliness and accuracy of news coverage.
• Coordinates and consults with other parts of DGC and the UN system to ensure story-telling focuses on breaking news developments, the Organization’s priorities, campaigns and solutions-oriented content sourced from the field for global platforms and amplification.
• Provides substantive input in the preparation of position papers and reports for presentation o intergovernmental bodies such as the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budget
Questions, Committee for Programme Coordination, Economic and Social Council, the General Assembly and other policy-making organs, as appropriate.
• Contributes to the reporting to intergovernmental bodies on budget/programme performance or on programmatic/ substantive issues, as appropriate, particularly those presented in biannual and/or annual reports.
• Ensures that teams are provided with guidance to optimize how content is produced for different platforms and shared via distribution channels with attention being paid to analytics and audience reach, as well as broadening the range of partners.
• Ensures that the outputs produced by the Unit/Section maintain high-quality standards; that reports are clear, objective and based on comprehensive data. Ensures that all outputs produced by the Unit/Section under his/her supervision meet required standards before completion to ensure they comply with the relevant mandates; provides oversight and guidance for a 24/7 hour operation, thereby exercising judgment on a daily basis and in high stress environment.
• Prepares inputs for the work programme of the Branch/Service/Division, determining priorities, and allocating resources for the completion of outputs and their timely delivery.
• Carries out programmatic/administrative tasks necessary for the functioning of the Unit/Section, including preparation of budgets, assigning and monitoring of performance parameters and critical indicators, reporting on budget/programme performance, preparation of inputs for results-based budgeting, evaluation of staff performance (PAS), interviews of candidates for job openings and evaluation of candidates.
• Manages a team; guides, develops and trains staff; identifies appropriate training packages to enhance multimedia skills of news producers in keeping with technological advancements.
• Represents the Organization at inter-agency meetings, seminars, etc. on substantive-related issues.
• Participates in international, regional or national meetings and provides programmatic/substantive expertise on an issue, or hold programmatic/substantive and organizational discussions with representatives of other institutions.
• Professionalism: In-depth familiarity with the online media environment and UN editorial and writing guidelines. Has the ability to draw on wide breadth of knowledge concerning current affairs and the role and policies of the United Nations. An advanced university degree (Master’s degree, or equivalent) in international relations, public relations, journalism or related area is required. A first-level degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in the specified fields of studies with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in public information and communication, journalism or related field, including at least 5 years at the international level is required.
Experience in exercising political judgment and sensitivity is required.
Experience in managing a large multi-cultural and multilingual team is required.
Experience in a deadline-driven global news environment is required.
Experience with enhancing distribution channels, carrying out analytics and promoting search engine optimization required.
Experience with digital communications, innovations and immersive tools is desirable.
Experience with oversight of video production is desirable.
Experience with managing a trust fund project is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required; knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

United Nations Considerations
