The Security Policy Studies ( SPS ) Program in the Elliott School of International Affairs at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. invites applications for the position of Assistant/Associate Professor of International Affairs and Associate Director of the SPS master’s program. The initial contract period will be June 1 2023 – May 31 2026, with the potential for renewal. This is a full-time, specialized faculty position.
SPS is a policy-oriented master’s degree program focusing on international security issues, with a particular emphasis on 21st century security challenges and how to respond to them. Students enroll in one of our 4 concentrations: U.S. national security, transnational security, conflict resolution, and science and technology. Students take cornerstone courses in international security and security policy analysis, and other foundational courses in their field of concentration in small classes with cohort members in Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters.
The SPS Program has approximately 240 students. The finalist will teach classes serving the SPS core curriculum needs and in U.S. national security and defense policy, and will report to the SPS Program Director and Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the Elliott School. They will work to integrate curricular offerings and activities to enhance the academic experiences of all SPS students. The Assistant/Associate Professor will also serve as Associate Director of the SPS program. In addition to teaching, this will include service responsibilities related to student recruitment, advising and oversight; curriculum design, planning, and management; recruitment and management of part-time faculty; and regular reporting and assessment of the program. They will also participate in SPS information sessions for prospective students and organize and participate in other SPS-related campus and virtual events.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach graduate courses in international security and U.S. national security and defense policy. We welcome applicants familiar with non-conventional security studies, including cybersecurity, climate security, transnational challenges, and other emerging topics. The teaching load will be 2-2.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
The effort breakdown for the position is 50% teaching, 50% administration/service. The teaching component includes four graduate courses during Fall (2) and Spring (2) semesters, which will include online instruction, in-person classes, or a combination of online/in-person instruction. The courses will cover core SPS curriculum requirements, including IAFF 6161 International Security, and courses on U.S. national security and defense policy. Administrative work and service includes student recruitment, advising and oversight; curriculum design, planning, and management; recruitment and management of part-time faculty; organizing curricular events; and regular reporting and assessment of the program.
Applicants must have excellent teaching skills as demonstrated by student evaluations, experience teaching and advising students at the graduate level, and a demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion in the classroom. They must hold a doctorate or equivalent degree in International Relations, International Security, Political Science, or a related field by date of appointment; ABD applicants will be considered but must complete all requirements for the doctorate by date of appointment.
