The leader of our Global Health Department (DGH) will provide direction and leadership for Save the Children US’s (SCUS) flagship work in Health across development, transition, and emergency settings. This position will set strategic direction, grow global market position, ensure access to and application of state-of-the-art health technologies and approaches, and deliver program results. They will develop key external partnerships with Save the Children Members and Save the Children International (SCI), public and private sector donors, universities, policymakers, and other implementation partners to advance and expand our impact for children. The Global Health Practice Leader will support the Save the Children US Global Health Breakthrough, an ambition to help children survive by reducing childhood deaths through addressing childhood pneumonia, newborn mortality, and nutrition, and supporting adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights so that, by 2030, no child under the age of five dies of preventable causes.
The Department of Global Health leader will mobilize support for our goals for children across Save the Children USA through leadership of a cross-functional business team. They will supervise, grow talent, and integrate the work of ~130 staff focused on maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health; nutrition and WASH; HIV/AIDS; humanitarian response; and project and portfolio management. They will develop and guide efforts to grow our health portfolio, valued at ~$613M, and staff consistent with the goals set out in the strategic plan, with special emphasis on innovative partnerships and business models.
Lastly, this person will be the leader in strategizing for and delivering on SCUS’s account strategy for health work, especially with the US government. They will grow the SCUS portfolio financially as well as in terms of program quality. They will also provide strong leadership and set the tone for management accountability while inspiring achievement of DGH program goals of SCUS and the International Programs division senior management team.
What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)
- Global Program Strategy and Market Position (25%)
- Set vision and goals in DGH portfolio, engaging Country Offices, Save the Children International, other global members of the Save the Children network, and the technical work of the Global Breakthroughs.
- Develop and guide the implementation of multi-year strategic and annual operational plans to achieve agency objectives and to expand our reach to children, collaborating with other members to ensure complementarity and collaboration.
- Represent Save the Children with the US government and key internal and external partners in the health communities.
- Ensure that clear process and outcome success measures are defined and tracked for SCUS - and ensure that good practices are adopted by the global SC movement.
- Identify and pursue opportunities for collaboration/joint action with SC globally on important policy and programming matters.
- Shape global health advocacy priorities, and work with Public Policy and Advocacy (PPA) and other Members to plan and implement that agenda.
- Chair SC USA cross-function business team to promote broad agency ownership of our results for children.
- Technical leadership and quality programming (20%)
- Provide leadership to develop evidence-based programming used throughout Save the Children in delivering results for children, and ensure that priorities and metrics for measuring progress on the SCUS and Global health strategies are in place.
- Shape and implement strategies to ensure that Save the Children develops, maintains and grows technical capacity in health and nutrition programming.
- Ensure that SCUS provides guidance and support to Country Offices both on individual opportunities and awards and on their strategic planning and execution.
- Ensure that state-of the-art quality standards are shared and promoted widely.
- Program learning and innovation (10%)
- Identify, prioritize and oversee development of opportunities to test and evaluate new or improved approaches to health program priorities with special attention to developing common approaches and assisting the global Save the Children to utilize these approaches successfully.
- Guide efforts to improve Collaborating, Learning, and Adapting (CLA) and ensure that DGH’s CLA work is linked to and supports the Global Health Breakthrough.
- Support the broader organization to improve research design, standards, and analysis, with special focus on building these capacities in the program countries.
- Resource Mobilization (25%)
- Develop and deliver on a resource mobilization plan for public and private funding streams, including US Government (especially USAID), foundations, private donors including corporate partners, and multilateral donors managed by SC USA, and identify new funding mechanisms such as DIBs and GFF — working closely with New Business Development and Resource Development.
- Set and achieve aggressive new raise targets for health portfolio.
- Develop global/regional partnerships to create new evidence and enhance the scale and impact of SDC-supported health activities; work with SC Member and Country Offices to position SC as a partner of choice.
- Work with Resource Development and Country Offices to secure individual, corporate, and foundation funding, with a special emphasis on innovative partnership and business models (e.g., opportunities through USAID’s Global Development Lab).
- In support of the Global Health Breakthrough, work with SC Members to pursue new global health funding opportunities.
- Advocate for and manage the department’s budget (undesignated, designated, and grants).
- Program Oversight and Management (10%)
- Identify and ensure that the needed management resources for the DGH portfolio are in place to guide and support country level program implementation.
- Problem solve with senior SCI partners when implementation challenges arise.
- Work to build the capacity of the SCI Country Offices to deliver strong health programs.
- Provide overall leadership for centrally managed (multi-country/global) health and nutritional programs, such as Advancing Nutrition and Breakthrough Action (USAID) and Saving Newborn Lives (BMGF).
- Staff management (10%)
- As the practice leader, set the tone for strong leadership and managerial accountability across the department.
- Effectively create the vision for the team and inspire engagement and “buy-in” demonstrating SCUS values and encouraging optimal performance across all levels within DGH.
- Lead in the establishment of a universal culture of dignity and respect among DGH staff that promotes the recruitment, retention, and management of a diverse staff in a safe and empowering environment.

- Oversee a team of 130 based in Washington DC and remotely all over the world
- A minimum of 15 years’ experience in progressively senior leadership/management positions in health-related field, spanning program and policy work on a global level
- Bachelor Degree in relevant field, or relevant equivalent experience
- Significant developing country experience in health and nutrition, preferably managing large scale programs and portfolios
- Established networks and familiarity with technical and donor community, especially USAID
- Willing and able to travel at least 20% of the time
- Recognized leadership in the global health sector and the ability to effectively represent organizational priorities and interests
- Broad knowledge of international development with specialized knowledge of health and nutrition
- Proven track record mobilizing significant resources
- Ability to create and build large scale strategies
- Experience leading large teams through change – and demonstrated ability to innovate
- Strong interpersonal skills, ability to work across boundaries and to lead by influence
