Democracy Now! seeks an experienced producer/journalist to join our team as an Interim Part-Time Broadcast News Writer/Producer. This person will research, write and  produce a global news roundup for our live TV/radio newscast, and pitch stories and guest ideas for our in-depth interview segments. We’re looking for someone who has impeccable news judgment, is an avid news consumer, thrives in the fast pace of live daily news, is an excellent writer and copy editor for broadcast and digital, has a good eye for editorial visuals and a passion for Democracy Now! and independent news. Our newscast Is live at 8am ET. 

This role will be responsible for producing news summaries for two broadcasts each week, which requires some prep-work in the evening followed by an early morning shift that concludes shortly after the broadcast. This is a temporary position to support a parental leave and will conclude at the end of September 2022.

We produce a daily TV & Radio newscast that is carried by more than 1,500 stations worldwide and reaches an audience of millions through our digital platforms.   • Research and write global news summaries 
  • Select compelling audio, video and graphics to enhance summaries
  • Write and edit scripts under deadline
  • Pitch stories & guests for in-depth segments
  • Review news summaries with hosts and producers and incorporate feedback
  • Prep summaries for distribution on digital platforms
  • Follow news developments throughout the day
  • Other duties as needed


  • 5-7 years journalism or news producing experience
  • Impeccable news judgment
  • Well acquainted with Democracy Now!
  • Live broadcast news experience strongly preferred
  • Avid global and domestic news consumer
  • Excellent writing and copy editing skills
  • Strong communication, collaboration and technology skills
  • Experience with newsroom systems preferred
  • Proven ability to work under tight, high-pressure deadlines
  • Experience writing for digital platforms preferred
  • Comfortable working evenings and early mornings 

Additional Information

  • This is a temporary part-time position ending September 30, 2022 with competitive compensation. The time commitment is approximately 20 hours per week including evenings and early mornings. Benefits are not provided. 
  • This is typically an onsite NYC-based position but can be performed remotely due to COVID-19.
