Position description

English Language Programs is the premier opportunity for educational and TESOL professionals to impact the way English is taught abroad. By completing projects designed by U.S. Embassies in more than 80 countries, English Language Fellows, Specialists, and Virtual Educators work closely with local teachers, students, and education professionals to improve English language teaching capacity overseas. Program participants serve as representatives and cultural ambassadors of the United States and, through a unique cultural exchange, they support the U.S. Department of State’s public diplomacy mission abroad.

Travel Abroad and Build Your Career 

The English Language Fellow Program sends experienced U.S. educators who have extensive experience in working with English Language Learners on paid in-country teaching assignments at universities and other academic institutions around the world. 

Fellow projects focus on training pre-service teachers, teaching university students or adult professionals, and building English language capacity in local communities. Fellows are citizen ambassadors who promote mutual understanding through English language learning and cultural exchange. The English Language Fellow Program provides professionals with a platform to build skills that can greatly enhance their careers.

Qualifications

Who are we looking for? 

Educators with:

  • Five years of experience in education, including at least three years in ESL/EFL classrooms or three years teaching English Language Learners
  • A graduate degree, preferably in TESOL or Education with TEFL certification, or a related field
  • Personal qualities of flexibility, resourcefulness, and cultural adaptability 
  • U.S. citizenship 

Program benefits:

  • Stipend: $40,000 plus Living Allowance (housing, food, utilities, local transportation) 
  • Round trip airfare to and from assignment
  • Dependents’ allowance (if applicable) 
  • Pre-departure allowances 
  • Supplemental health benefit plan 
  • Program activities allowance

The English Language Fellow Program is now recruiting applicants for the 2025-2026 academic year. Applications are accepted until all projects have been filled.
