Position description

The Director of Development Services is responsible for managing all fundraising support activities, including gift processing, financial monitoring, human resources, prospect management, prospect research, fundraising analytics, financial reporting, and the development of institutional policies and standards. This position directly supervises the operations and research teams to ensure data integrity, strategic use of fundraising systems, accurate incoming gift management, and prospect management.

Responsibilities

Management and Human Resources (60%)

  • Supervises all fundraising operations, including all gift and acknowledgement processing, prospect research and prospect management, and utilization and maintenance of the Raiser's Edge fundraising database and the SharePoint sites.
  • Oversees all prospect research, including supervision of all research products produced by Central Development.
  • Leads the strategy, development, and maintenance of a comprehensive prospect and donor tracking system to support Institution-wide development activities.
  • Assists the Vice President and Associate Vice President in supporting the efforts and meetings of the Board of Trustees, Development Committee, Steering Committee and any other efforts as assigned.
  • Serves as the Development representative on internal committees as needed.
  • Maintains Brookings’s Donor Guidelines and Policies and leads an annual review by coordinating with stakeholders throughout the Institution.
  • Serves as the Department lead for HR issues in Central Development and oversees all hiring, performance issues, performance review, and handles other HR issues as needed.
  • Monitors needs and provides ongoing support for staff training and development. Mentors staff and serves as a resource for staff growth.

Finance, Tracking, and Analytics (40%)

  • Tracks unrestricted, President’s Special Initiatives Fund, and select restricted revenue and works with the Central Development team to forecast annual projections. Reports regularly to Development, Finance, and Executive Office leadership on progress towards goals.
  • Creates and ensures accuracy of fundraising reports for the Finance staff, Board of Trustee meetings, Steering Committee and others as requested.
  • Disseminates performance metrics for development staff and works with staff to identify issues and create plans to meet goals.
  • Monitors and approves department purchases and expenditures.
  • Works with Finance staff on development and monitoring of department budget, and represents Development interests in Brookings-wide decisions on financial issues as appropriate.
  • Oversees prospect research budget.

Qualifications

Education/Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree required. Minimum eight years of relevant experience in nonprofit fundraising. Demonstrated experience with financial analysis, preferably in a non-profit environment. Leadership and management experience to develop and oversee staff and to direct day-to-day activities and operations is required.

Knowledge/Skills Requirements:

Understanding of fundraising in a complex and dynamic organization desired; understanding of, and interest in, public policy desired. Demonstrated ability to handle confidentiality of sensitive issues and information. Superior communication skills; strong initiative and problem solving skills. Attention to detail and the ability to operate with considerable independence to effectively establish priorities and work accurately under time constraints. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office suite with advanced proficiency in Excel; Experience with Raiser’s Edge or other relational database. Must be capable of working well with diverse groups and individuals. Must be a team player who welcomes collaborative decision-making; a collegial style and an appreciation for the work of Brookings’ scholars and the vital national policy questions their work addresses. Strong analytical skills with respect to various forms of data and experience with complex information management. Excellent project management skills; ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines and maintain disciplined adherence to department goals.
