Position description

The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is a nonpartisan law and policy institute that seeks to improve our systems of democracy and justice. We work to hold our political institutions and laws accountable to the twin American ideals of democracy and equal justice for all. Among our core priorities, we fight to protect voting rights, end mass incarceration, strengthen checks and balances, and preserve Constitutional protection in the fight against terrorism. Part think tank, part public interest law center, part cutting-edge communications hub, we are known for our rigorous research. We craft innovative policies and strategies, and we fight for them — in the courts, in Congress and the states, and in the court of public opinion.

The Brennan Center seeks an exceptional attorney to work in the Democracy Program on issues related to securing American elections from foreign interference. The scope and sophistication of Russian interference in the 2016 elections, and the ongoing vulnerability of our election systems, demand urgent action. With our secure elections project, the Brennan Center seeks bolster the reliability of our election infrastructure and protect the integrity of our democracy in 2018, 2020, and the years ahead. Drawing on more than a decade of work in this space, we seek to advance key reforms through a combination of legislative and regulatory advocacy at the federal, state and local level, research and writing, media communications, public education, and legislative drafting.

Responsibilities include:

  • Advancing legislative and policy advocacy goals at the federal and state levels, counseling federal and state policy makers and advocates, drafting and reviewing legislation, and working in coalition.
  • Collaborating with election officials, national security leaders, academics, technologists, and allies to advance reforms in Congress, state legislatures and in the private sector.
  • Conducting research and writing reports identifying vulnerabilities of American elections to foreign interference and proposing policy solutions.
  • Contributing to the public debate about democracy through media and communications work, including public speaking engagements, blog posts, op-eds, and conferences.
  • May include engaging in appellate and trial court litigation to further goals, including drafting and coordinating amicus briefs.

Qualifications

A J.D. degree with 2 to 7 years of legal experience is preferred, though exceptional candidates, including those without a J.D. degree, will be considered. A technology background is preferred.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Exceptional writing skills for a variety of audiences (including legal, legislative, journalistic, and public).
  • Excellent analytic and research skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-based and deadline-driven environment while maintaining a heavy docket of work.
  • Ability to effectively coordinate coalitions and bipartisan groups of experts with strong opinions
  • Experience in government (Legislative or Executive Branch) preferred. Prior knowledge of Federal or state rule-making/regulatory process a plus.
  • A technology background.
  • Strong organization skills.
  • Openness to feedback.
  • Strong strategic thinking skills, and the capacity to conceptualize, develop, execute, and achieve the intended goals
  • Strong entrepreneurial spirit and passion for the work of the Brennan Center.
  • Strong public speaking and communications skills.

The salary is highly competitive in the field and commensurate with experience. A generous benefits package is available as well.
