We are looking for a motivated and proactive individual to join our team in Brussels for a 12-month traineeship, starting on 1 February 2020.


The Successful Candidate will meet the Following Criteria:

  • Degree in journalism, communications, European affairs, politics, sociology or equivalent;
  • Native or native-standard English, both spoken and written;
  • Previous experience in communications-related roles in a professional or voluntary capacity;
  • Good knowledge of graphic design (e.g. Canva and Adobe) and with photo and film editing skills;
  • Familiarity with Content Management Systems (CMS), particularly Joomla, and with MailChimp;
  • Excellent writing skills, with a proven ability to produce clear easy-to-read prose;
  • Strong experience of working with social media;
  • Highly efficient, able to multi-task and work on their own initiative;
  • It is a distinct advantage if you speak a language relevant to EED’s work including Arabic, Russian, Turkish, languages of the Western Balkans etc.

Main Tasks

  • Reporting to the Communications Manager, the Communications Trainee will support the EED Communications team, which is responsible for communications, knowledge management and events organisation;
  • Manage EED social media accounts, including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn with responsibility for social media planning, post creation and management, and ongoing analytics;
  • Design online stories and campaigns to include photographs and videos;
  • Prepare and manage regular e-newsletters;
  • Provide support to events management;
  • Create written content for EED communications tools, including website, annual report and other ad hoc reports;
  • Provide support to management of website CMS system;
  • Support Communications Manager in cultivation of media contacts.


The European Endowment for Democracy (EED) is a grant-giving organisation based in Brussels.

EED’s goal is to provide flexible support to democracy activists, complementing other EU and member state democracy support programmes. EED provides context-based, demand driven support based on a principle of fostering democracy and facilitating initiatives of local actors. EED believes in taking an unconventional approach to supporting democracy through investing in transformational ideas and the people behind them. Its geographic mandate covers the European neighbourhood and beyond.

Position Summary

EED seeks a trainee for a 12-month traineeship (starting March 2019) related to Communications Assistance.

Start date: 1 March 2020, duration: one year

NB. For practical reasons, citizenship of an EU Member State or residency in the European Union is a requirement.
