Position description

Since 1997, MESA has facilitated thousands of hands-on, agroecological and cultural exchanges between beginning farmers from 51 countries and U.S. mentor farms. MESA has also spearheaded popular certificate courses in agroecology, wildfire resilience, climate adaptation and organic seed production for over 1400 online learners. MESA’s current online agroecology classes are highly participatory and feature a growing roster of esteemed subject matter experts and instructors. We currently facilitate two USDA-funded projects for hundreds of participants, in partnership with multiple strategic partner organizations. The U.S. programs provide agroecology instruction, course certificates, farm apprenticeships and micro-business development support for aspiring beginning farmers and food producers from historically marginalized communities. MESA is also revitalizing our legacy global farmer-to-farmer exchange program with a dual aim to better prepare incoming global Stewards for U.S. training opportunities, and to build more resources for global alumni and partner affiliates. 

Across all of our programs, we strive to grow more farmers, cultivate community, and support local economies. 

After 25 years of advancing sustainable agriculture through experiential learning, training and cultural exchange, we seek an outgoing, talented and creative team member to bring new focus and energy to MESA’s fundraising and communications strategies. We’re hoping to find a candidate with deep non-profit fundraising experience, but we are willing to train the right person.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Work with the E.D. to develop and execute an annual fundraising plan 
  • Plan and launch engaging fundraising campaigns and oversee related activities Research funding opportunities and submit proposals
  • Develop new relationships with foundation, corporate, and individual donors 
  • Identify and cultivate new sustaining donors and strategic partners
  • Oversee donor management system and facilitate data entry and gift processing
  • Develop and track proposals 
  • Build upon existing partnerships with our current funders 
  • Develop impact reports for prospective and current foundations, donors and stakeholders 
  • Assist communications by writing copy for the website, creating marketing materials, etc.


  • Nonprofit development or communications background, including grant writing and reporting 
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills 
  • The ability to work independently and switch gears frequently 
  • Interest in sustainable agriculture, leadership training, professional development, experiential learning, cross-cultural exchange 
  • Familiarity with Google Suite, Adobe Pro, social media, budgets, email platforms, Database 

Pay and benefits: 

  • Full-time plus benefits: 52K-62K annual DOE, hourly/non-exempt 

Work Location: SF Bay Area residence preferred, but willing to consider full telecommute for the right candidate (U.S. citizenship required)
