Position description

AFS-USA is part of a worldwide network of AFS partner organizations that work together to advance global education and foster meaningful connections across cultures. As the network’s largest partner, AFS-USA works to increase the global competency of U.S. citizens by providing a variety of international and intercultural learning experiences to individuals, families, schools, and communities. We are proud of our Staff from our national office in New York City as well as home offices across the county, who collaborate with our more than 2,000 AFS-USA Volunteers to deliver high quality programs and global education resources. These include immersion-based study abroad experiences in over 40 countries worldwide; opportunities to host foreign AFS exchange students; and global learning workshops and curricula for educators, schools and businesses.

 

AFS-USA manages several U.S. government sponsored programs which provide scholarships for adolescents to participate in international exchange programs, one of which is the Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) program. The Sponsored Programs department at AFS focuses on maintaining relationships with the funder (U.S. Department of State) and incorporating the sponsored programs into overall AFS programming. The FLEX Specialist will work most closely with another the Manager of Inbound Sponsored Programs and the Sponsored Programs team.

Core responsibilities of the role include program reporting, as well as coordination of participant support communications among key stakeholders with AFS-USA, collaborating organizations and the funder, the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State (ECA). The Specialist will also collaborate with team members to coordinate travel and logistics and develop and lead content during student orientations. This position requires domestic and international travel up to 15%.

 

DUTIES/RESONSIBILITIES: 

  • Coordinate with participant support staff to facilitate the communication of participant support issues to program funder and collaborating organizations, as appropriate. Develop and report on trend analysis and provide feedback to cooperating organizations as appropriate to suggest program improvements or adjustments. 
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and up-to-date case files, and ensure that complete documentation is obtained and recorded in all cases. 
  • Provide quarterly reporting on program progress, write program highlights and provide other program specific input as needed for program management and analysis and internal and external visibility purpose. 
  • Implement, collect and analyze surveys that monitor on-program participant adjustment as well as analysis of other participant support data to improve program materials, training and inform reporting. 
  • Act as a FLEX program resource for host families, students, volunteers, and staff, including periodic host family and school visits.
  • Coordinate program-specific logistics as needed, including general planning and implementation, participant travel, event and orientation planning and onsite coordination. 
  • Contribute to other Sponsored Programs projects and initiatives, as needed. 
  • Periodic oversight of seasonal staff or interns as needed.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 2-4 years of experience in international educational exchange field or equivalent
  • Bachelor’s degree required in the field of International Relations, Internal Education or another related field Proven ability to multitask and prioritize ongoing responsibilities 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills 
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Keen attention to detail in all forms, especially written
  • Ability to handle emotionally intense situations and maintain calm under pressure  
  • Experience or a high level of comfort in an intercultural setting
  • Training and or teaching experience and skills strongly desired
  • Counseling or conflict management experience strongly desired

 

WORK EXPECTATIONS:

This is a full-time position with a 35 hour work week. While is this is a remote position, the ability to work from our New York office as needed is preferred. Applicants outside of New York but within the U.S. will still be considered. This position requires domestic and international travel up to 15%.
