Position description

The primary function of the SimEx Lead Facilitator is to lead facilitation, including supporting the implementation of wide-ranging program activities inclusive of working with the HRTU team facilitating humanitarian response simulation exercises, participation in the curriculum review and update process, and contributing content to project reports.


  • Alongside the Senior Project Manager, lead review and update training plans and materials for each simulation exercise; support planning as agreed
  • Work with HRTU team and existing simulation exercise facilitators on the transition to a new facilitation team
  • Lead the simulation event to help ensure it meets program objectives
  • Support trainers: lead discussion/revisions for content, roles, and process as needed
  • Support, plan, and facilitate the end-of-day and end-of-simulation debrief sessions
  • Prepare and submit agreed upon content and feedback for the simulation report
  • Participate in planning and after-action meetings with the HRTU team and the donor
  • Prepare and submit after action review and lessons learned for each simulation exercise, present findings, and provide recommendations for future simulations.
  • Coordinate and lead the simulation exercise, ensuring that it is adapted to the learning needs of the trainees and the dynamics of the project
  • Analyse learning progress and adapt the simulation injects to the learning needs of the teams/individual trainees
  • Demonstrated experience managing simulation-based trainings to ensure, with confidence, the development and facilitation of program activities inclusive of working with the HRTU team on curriculum updates, facilitating and co-facilitating simulation exercises, and contributing content to project reports
  • Ensure familiarization with materials for training sessions and seek clarification on any queries in advance of the training

Work with the training team, BHA, and onsite IMC staff as appropriate, to identify improvements to be made and ensure these are implemented in a timely manner.


  • Demonstrated expertise in conducting simulation-based learning. Subject matter expertise in humanitarian coordination mechanisms including experience of working or engaging with humanitarian actors at senior/strategic levels (e.g. HQ, UN, government officials, donors, etc.)
  • At least 10 years of experience in humanitarian response and complex humanitarian emergencies
  • At least 10 years of experience in a senior leadership capacity in an international post


  • Prior Senior Management role in complex emergency humanitarian response environments
  • Strong communication and representational skills
  • Expert knowledge of humanitarian response coordination architecture, mechanisms and standards


  • Expert knowledge of learning methods and objectives for adult and professional audiences
  • Cross-cultural communication skills, collaboration, Interpersonal influence, adaptive thinking, emotional intelligence
