About the position

We are looking for a highly motivated, creative, and well-organised person to join our dynamic team who will contribute to projecting a positive and sophisticated image of Australia.

Under limited direction, the Public Affairs and Visits Manager is responsible for the development and implementation of the Mission’s public diplomacy strategy to increase Australia’s soft power across the EU, NATO and in Belgium and Luxembourg, and advance Australia’s international policy priorities.

The key responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Contribute towards the development of the Mission’s public diplomacy strategy and related activities throughout Belgium and Luxembourg;
  • Effectively implement the public diplomacy strategy in a manner that advances Australia’s international policy priorities relating to the EU, NATO and bilateral relations with Belgium and Luxembourg;
  • Manage public diplomacy budget;
  • Assist in the development and management of official visits and events;
  • Develop and maintain arts and cultural sector and media relationships;
  • Coordinate responses to media enquiries and act as media contact;
  • Maintain and develop effective social media and online presence;
  • Supervise a public affairs officer.

Required Qualifications/Experience

  • Knowledge of EU institutions, policies and processes is essential. Knowledge of Australian systems, policies and processes would be a distinct advantage. Knowledge of Belgian government systems, policies and processes is preferred;
  • High level research and analytical skills;
  • Experience in public affairs, including social/print media and events management;
  • High level written and spoken communication skills in English, and preferably one of Belgium’s official languages;
  • Trade/economic policy literacy would be highly desirable.

SELECTION CRITERIA

A. Demonstrated knowledge of foreign affairs, including Australian, EU bilateral relations and government policies to help develop and implement a Public Diplomacy Strategy;

B. Established supervision and management skills; ensure objectives are set, prioritised, monitored and met; deliver effective results with limited direction;

C. Proven record of providing high level stakeholder management, negotiating with influence and building beneficial networks;

D. Effective judgment, decision making and complex-problem solving skills, including a demonstrated ability to use initiative and innovation;

E. Strong planning and organisational skills with the ability to work under pressure and manage key public events for the Mission under limited supervision and proficiency in the use of digital media tools;

F. A high level of written and oral proficiency in English, for both traditional and digital platforms in a professional environment with a proven ability to prepare written material to present information in a logical, succinct and persuasive manner;

G. Demonstration of high level proficiency in French and/or Dutch.
