Common Hope promotes hope and opportunity in Guatemala by working with impoverished children and families, as well as the communities in which they live, to partner in a process of development to improve their lives through education, health care, and housing. Position Overview:

The Communications Assistant serves Common Hope as a long-term volunteer based in Guatemala and is an assistant to the Associate Director of Marketing & Events who is located in the United States. This position also supports the public relations and communications needs of the Country Director in Guatemala on an as-assigned basis.


The Communications Assistant role is dedicated to seeking relevant and valuable content and imagery, delivering timely copy, and managing the editorial calendar for Common Hope.

  • Demonstrated attitude of service, commitment to work in a service environment and to learn about Guatemalan culture
  • Willingness to work onsite and in the villages
  • Ability to work effectively in both Spanish and English, with excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Direct communication skills

Specific Duties:

  • Share Common Hope messages and program impact with donors, sponsors, teams and others to raise awareness and fund-raise
  • Research and draft stories for print and electronic newsletters, website (blog), marketing collateral and social media
  • Manage and grow Common Hope’s social media presence (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn)  
  • Serve as communications liaison between Guatemala and United States by working with country team, EMT, program managers, and strategic relations department 
  • Proactive coordination with Guatemala program leaders to secure beneficiary/program stories and photos for communications 
  • Serve as lead site photographer, securing images for publications, collateral, social media, website, and events as-needed
  • Create, update, and manage photo diaries for Vision Teams
  • Update online Sponsorship Gallery
  • Help create/design marketing materials for Strategic Relations Team as needed
  • Translate collateral and communications including: newsletters, e-news, website content, and social media posts into Spanish
  • Develop and maintain a historic and current photo library to document Common Hope’s organizational history across all sites in Guatemala
  • Maintain photo displays in Antigua site
  • Prepare logistics and research content for visiting photographers and videographers 
  • Pitch and deliver news articles to local Guatemalan publications 
  • Distribute Common Hope materials to Guatemala businesses and partners
  • Ensure that sufficient quantities of Common Hope promotional materials are available in Antigua and surrounding villages including hotels, restaurants and other places of frequented by tourists 
  • Develop strategies to recruit/secure new Guatemalan partners and relationships  in order to generate opportunities to share the mission of Common Hope in Guatemala
  • Support the Strategic Relations/Sponsorship teams with photography and copy when requested to cultivate individual relationships with donors
  • Arrange for printing locally when necessary
  • On a case by case basis, support Visitor Experience Team with translation needs
  • Assist Associate Director of Marketing & Events as directed
  • Update Guatemala Employee photos annually for human resources if time permits

*Training will be provided once the volunteer arrives in Guatemala


  • Bachelor’s or equivalent degree in Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, English/Spanish, International Relations, or related field
  • Demonstrated experience in marketing and communications
  • Bilingual: Spanish and English
  • Excellent writing and verbal skills a must
  • Creative and flexible
  • Organized; detail-oriented
  • Ability to work independently
  • Flexible; must be willing to work some nights/weekends
  • Social media understanding; strategy and planning knowledge, content creation, editorial calendar management 
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines and excellent time management skills
  • Working knowledge of Wordpress website
  • Working knowledge of Constant Contact or other email client
  • Working knowledge of photo and video editing; Adobe Photoshop, Animoto
  • Working knowledge of web and print design; Adobe InDesign
