Position description

Develop and maintain a results-oriented government relations and industry advocacy strategy with a focus on all branches of the armed services within the Department of Defense. Strategy should be in alignment with the priorities established in the Johnson Controls Federal Systems’ (JCFS) Organizational Goals. Contribute to the achievement of business strategies and financial plans through government advocacy efforts on behalf of all JCFS business units: Johnson Controls Building Automation Systems (JCBAS), Johnson Controls Government Systems (JCGS) and Johnson Controls Navy Systems (JCNS). Serve as the primary Federal Government liaison to provide informed and data driven insights regarding market relevant topics. This includes current policy awareness, mission capability themes, industry best practices, government decision-making trends, and anticipation of future topics of interest. The involvement in business development strategies may be conducted directly with the customer or in support of JCFS departments, and the topics of importance may span from broadly conceptual to project specific. Establish and maintain productive relations with military and civilian personnel to create alignment between JCFS, policy makers, and other influential stakeholders. Represent the company in appropriate industry focus groups and non-governmental organizations. Demonstrate initiative and thought leadership in advocating for JCFS interests and fulfilling business development strategies. Support JCFS efforts to campaign for innovation with government policy makers.

How you will do it
• Educate Department of Defense personnel on topics that support our products, solutions, and business initiatives;
• Create and maintain a positive leadership image and business climate for JCFS among federal policymakers with a primary focus on the Department of Defense;
• Engage with DoD leadership and opinion leaders to gain clarity on mission critical issues in sufficient depth to provide thought leadership within JCFS concerning offering and organizational development priorities;
• Engage DoD leadership, agencies and commands to help provide strategic solutions to critical resilience, energy and cybersecurity challenges;
• Work with all business units on strategies and matters involving and benefitting from government interaction;
• Engage with JCFS business units in strategic planning and prioritization;
• Work proactively with JCFS business development and sales staff to develop and advance business opportunities;
• Work with JCFS business units to resolve government related issues and conflicts when they occur;
• Help manage major company events, including the annual Energy Efficiency Forum, high profile meetings, and visits with government officials;
• Participate in industry associations and relevant Non-Government Organizations, and play a leadership role in those associations to leverage their collective influence on behalf of JCFS;
• Work with JCFS Marketing and Communications staff on public relations topics involving government matters;
• Build organizational awareness by communicating Government Affairs topics across the JCI and JCFS business units;
• Organize and participate in industry panels, workshops, and think tanks to influence industry, government personnel, and JCFS personnel on prevailing mission capability themes;
• Provide counsel to the business around government relations trends, challenges, opportunities, etc. (solid recommendations around taking advantage of upcoming trends, assessing those issues which need to be raised to the Business, manage the dialogue around opportunities, etc.).

Qualifications

Required
• Bachelor’s degree in Business, Political Science, Engineering or International Affairs
• 10+ years Government experience with a preference for Department of Defense experience across all branches and service lines
• Excellent communication skills with management at all levels and customer management skills are required
• The ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance required. (This involves a background/character, criminal history, employment, and credit check.)
• Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills, and the ability to balance multiple tasks with close attention to detail
• Vision, ability to identify emerging threats and opportunities
