Job Description

ShelterBox is a leading global nonprofit organization whose mission is to deliver humanitarian aid in the form of shelter and lifesaving supplies when natural disaster or conflict impacts a region. From Syria, to Ethiopia, the Philippines, Vanuatu, the Lake Chad Basin, and beyond, in 2020 ShelterBox provided shelter to more than 200,000 people who were left homeless from disaster and conflict situations. ShelterBox has a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, a platinum status in GuideStar, was nominated for the 2018 and 2019 Nobel Peace Prize and is the official project partner of Rotary International in disaster relief.

The Position

ShelterBox USA (SBUSA) is seeking a hardworking, detail-oriented, results driven Partnership and Fundraising Manager focused on foundations, with some institutional engagement. Supervised by the Director of Foundation Relations, this role is responsible for securing funding and reaching out to U.S.-based potential and current partners and funders in the international humanitarian space. The Manager facilitates the fundraising and outreach strategies to secure resources to support ShelterBox’s global mission of providing emergency shelter and essential supplies to families in communities impacted by disaster or conflict situations. Most engagement is with organizations in the Washington D.C. area, but also includes Baltimore, New York, and other East Coast locations.

 

A new position, the Manager will use ShelterBox’s Fundable Opportunity proposals and reports to engage current and potential partners and funders in ShelterBox’s global work. This includes new donor and partner prospect identification and outreach.

 

Critical responsibilities include:

  • Outreach & Relationship Building (External Facing) (40%)
    • Manage & Implement Fundraising Cycle to actively engage donors, partners, prospects, and sector leaders that align with ShelterBox’s sphere of work.
    • Committee Work: Participate and engage in ShelterBox USA and ShelterBox global committees as well as external groups that align with the role.
  • Research, Scoping, & Strategy (Internal Facing) (40%):  
    • Scope and Strategy: Work with the Director of Foundation Relations to scope the funding landscape and develop targets to establish, implement, and monitor short and long-range goals, objectives, and tactics to support resource development and increase ShelterBox’s presence in Washington D.C., New York, Baltimore, and surrounding areas. 
    • Research: Identify and research partner and funding prospects, Request for Proposals (RFPs), Notice Of Fundable Opportunities (NOFOs), and ShelterBox’s programs and other work for resourcing potential.
    • Funding Cycle and Relationship Building: Understand and utilize the giving cycle for different partner and funding targets to secure resources.
    • Build and foster relationships focused on foundations and potential partners, as well as government institutions to support the development of Fundable Opportunities that enable the delivery of ShelterBox goals including establishing and growing relationships with key players to support development and securing of resources.
    • Grant and Report Editing: Work with the Grant Writer and Director of Foundation Relations to edit and customize cases for support, concept notes, proposals, and reports and present them to targeted funders and partners.
    • Database and Records Management: Light database work to record engagement with partners and funders.
  • Other Duties as Assigned (10%): The Manager will occasionally be asked to take on other projects or partner with other members of the SBUSA and/or global staff to support campaign appeals, events, and other projects.

Position Status and Location

This position is an exempt, full-time role based on the East Coast, with work focused in the Washington D.C. area, as well as Baltimore, New York, and other locations where international partners and funders are located.

 

Qualifications

The person ShelterBox is seeking has a problem-solving, positive attitude with a focus on our goal to engage potential and current partners and donors in ShelterBox’s mission. They have an interest and ability to understand all areas of ShelterBox’s ongoing programs and articulate the impact of ShelterBox’s mission to others. The candidate needs to be comfortable creating and developing the systems, processes and tools required for success, rather than working within a mature existing framework. They can identify, organize, and actively engage in opportunities to further ShelterBox’s mission in the fundraising space. They have the skill and ability to ask and secure transformative gifts to the organization. The Manager is responsible for supporting the Foundation Department fundraising activities of ShelterBox USA.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree; prior experience in international policy, international development, global studies, nonprofit management, global economics, disaster management, or a similar area preferred.
  • 2-4 years of successful experience in partner and donor stewardship and solicitation, with a record of success.
  • Proven track record of achieving goals.
  • Candidate has personally solicited and secured restricted funding for specific programs.
  • Strong networking and presentation skills, which have resulted in donations.
  • Ability to work flexible hours to attend evening networking events.
  • Strong understanding of international outreach and funding landscape in Washington D.C. and surrounding areas.
  • High interest in global humanitarian work, familiarity with global news, human rights, development issues, and crisis/disaster issues including Disaster Risk Reduction and local capacity building.
  • Excellent research, organization, and communications skills with demonstrated ability to write clearly and persuasively.
  • Attention to detail with a high degree of initiative is critical to this role.
  • Exceptional team player with a proactive, “can-do” attitude, and the ability to work flexibly and problem-solve within a team and individually.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment remotely alongside national and international coworkers and volunteers.
  • Can work calmly and effectively in a time-pressured environment. Adapting quickly to changing circumstances.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
  • Qualified candidates should possess excellent writing and computer skills (Microsoft Office Word, PowerPoint, Excel, SharePoint, and Teams), and basic database entry skills.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of funding requirements for Washington D.C.-based, and other East Coast funders.
  • Experience fundraising with Filipino-American, Syrian American, or other diaspora communities.
  • Experience preparing successful proposals for USAID and/or the US Department of State.
  • Adobe Acrobat and InDesign experience.
  • Experience working with a database, Blackbaud.
