The Mesa is an exciting new B2B technology focused on social good that has been incubated by I.G., with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The Mesa empowers philanthropic intermediaries (banks, advisors, community foundations, nonprofits and donor collectives) to build thriving, interactive and impactful online communities. With The Mesa, an impact community (groups of individuals or organizations focused on social and environmental change) can now have a completely customizable and private hub where their members or clients can connect with like-minded peers, develop their philanthropic prowess and become more ethical stewards of wealth. The I.G. team is based across the UK, with global roots.

The Role

The Mesa platform is a first-of-its-kind technology in the social impact space. Because of this, many impact communities are eager to bring their groups on, but don’t know how to build an online – and in certain cases, offline - community. That is why The Mesa team offers strategy and implementation community services in addition to the platform. As the Head of Community, you will bring strategic vision, and a passion for content creation and community building, to The Mesa to help more communities build collaborative spaces focused on positive action.

The Head of Community will be the person to develop this programme, and the various offerings within it, for impact communities around the world. As the Head of Community, you will be the lead on any community activities for these clients. This includes leading internal project teams, managing key client relationships, and designing how this programme should operate now and in the future. Community activities range from helping clients develop their collective purpose to building their online community strategy to creating an action plan for using The Mesa.

This role will be working on the senior leadership team, reporting directly to the Managing Director.

The role of Head of Community is dynamic, exciting, varied, intense and constantly evolving. Our goal on The Mesa, and at I.G. Advisors in general, is to go above and beyond expectations, delivering innovative, ambitious and tailored solutions to our clients.

No two days working on The Mesa are ever the same: as a lean, start-up environment within a small company, our team wears many hats (sometimes at the same time) and with great ambition comes the need for great people. We need a multi-talented multitasker who thrives on working on a diverse and varied slate of work.

 

Content and Community Strategy & Implementation 

·       Collaborate closely with our Head of Product to suggest and refine functionality that supports best practice community management and engagement.

·      Leverage current methodologies and frameworks to support impact communities both online and offline, and develop new ones when none exists.

·      Work with impact communities to identify their goals and vision, build and map how they conduct the community experience, and set up a sustainable, data-driven structure that is well-governed and scalable. 

·      Develop toolkits, events, and content for Hosts of impact communities to leverage to create active, sticky communities.

·      Provide coaching to Hosts on how they should use community tools and content to build strong communities.

·      Lead on the strategy of a global Mesa network in which all impact community members can engage in one central space.

·      Build out and run a Mesa Host community of practice so impact community owners can learn from one another.

·      Monitor community activity (where appropriate and applicable), establishing effective benchmarks for measuring the growth of the community, and define objectives to increase usage.

·      Identify gaps or opportunities within the various impact communities, providing input regarding the evolution of the community and assist in strategy development for future phases.

·      Manage relationship with impact communities that utilise our community services, including activities like kick-off meetings, workshops, and presentations of findings.

·      Identify different types of educational content that the I.G. team, partners, and non-profits curate and/or create for impact communities to include on their platform for their members.

·      Build and manage strategic partnerships with content creators.

 

Business Development

·      Manage the relationship with prospective impact communities that want to leverage our services, including contract negotiations, exploratory meetings, and pitch conversations.

·      Help to define and articulate The Mesa’s vision and strategy, in order to establish The Mesa as a leading place for impact communities to go to, to build and implement their community strategies.

·      Play a key role in the evolution of The Mesa’s business model by helping to refine our pricing structure, defining the product bundles, and articulating the ROI for customers.

·      Work closely with The Mesa’s Managing Director in developing new systems and processes around the community offerings to ensure the platform’s support services, are becoming smoother, more sustainable and scalable.

·      Effectively represent The Mesa, and I.G. more broadly, externally, to showcase our – and your own – leadership and expertise as community specialists in the social impact space.

·      Prepare proposals to a high standard, developing clear briefs and working with the broader team to innovate around The Mesa’s services and product offering.

 

Leadership and Team Management

·      Lead on the hiring of additional community staff (as needed).

·      Provide clear direction and leadership for the team towards priorities, and support staff to meet objectives.

·      Proactively identify and take action on the needs of the whole team to ensure high performance, positive working culture, and future-proof teamwork processes.

·      Successfully manage the evolution of The Mesa, ensuring effective communication, consultation and implementation of refinements to standards and templates.

·      Lead with integrity, inspiring confidence and managing in a transparent and consultative way, taking responsibility for problems.

·      Foster a culture of feedback and collaboration, and implement processes that ensure all work is of a suitable standard before being sent.

·      Share and implement ideas, best practice and learning internally to benefit the wider team's work.

·      Recommend and evaluate team objectives for the benefit of the staff and The Mesa.

·      Be the go-to person for all things community for The Mesa.

·      Support with ad-hoc I.G. innovation initiatives.

 

Qualifications

·      You live and breathe community: You are an expert at building communities online (and offline) with 6 - 8 years of related work experience.

·      A strategic problem solver: You bring a mix of creative, big picture strategic vision, alongside practical solutions. 

·      You are an educator. You take pleasure in helping impact communities learn new skills.  

·      Intellectually curious: You have a solid understanding of trends and priorities in technology, social impact, and the emerging discipline of community management, and you take time to continuously educate yourself.

·      A stellar communicator with first class relationship management skills: You are a supportive people person with clear and persuasive verbal and written communications.

·      You are a pioneer: The idea of developing a whole new function fills you with excitement, not dread.

·      You have a high attention to detail: You are incredibly efficient and organized, known for your unparalleled attention to detail, and ability to demonstrate responsiveness, reliability and dependability. A love of structure and deadlines, and knowledge of how to prioritize to meet them.

·      An independent team player: You are an entrepreneurial spirit who thrives working with a small team in a flexible and fast-paced environment. You have a willingness to get your hands dirty and try new things that sit outside your comfort zone.

Role Specifics

·      Salary: Starting at £45,000

·      Hours: Full Time, Monday – Friday 

·      Location: Remote working to start, UK-based

·      Benefits: Pension, health insurance, 38 days annual leave (including 25 days annual leave, your birthday off, UK bank holidays, and the time between Christmas and New Years), and a flexible working policy.

·      Reporting to: Managing Director
