Position description

Founded in 2018, Humanity for Relief and Development (HRD) began as a tribute to CEO Maeen Ali's deceased brother to secure the livelihood of his late children. Rather than limit the love and generosity that comes with sharing a meal, HRD staff and volunteers decided to open Mercy Bakeries in Yemen. HRD operates primarily in Northern Yemen with some expansion into the South through partner organizations and maintains an office in Brooklyn, NY with a potential fundraising office based in Ottawa, Canada. HRD is seeking to hire senior level staff to manage the influx of funds and scale the impact of its existing programs, use its existing resources wisely, and set the foundation for sustainability in the next 1-3 years. 

Major Function: Reporting to the CEO, the Communication and Development Director is responsible for the development of grassroots and community fundraising efforts, donor outreach, and supervision of marketing efforts.


Key Accountability: 

  • Create a 1-3 year in-house fundraising strategy that accounts for HRD’s prime donor base and appeal of programs for additional audiences
  • Define HRD target audiences 
  • Prepare annual fundraising/marketing budgets (including any need to hire contractors and campaign specific budgets)
  • Coordinate marketing plans- print, online, mail, and events- for HRD audiences 
  • Leverage third party and in-house marketer capabilities to deliver program success stories and HRD’s theory of change to target audiences 
  • Represent HRD to major donors (virtual and/or in person, context permitting)
  • Establish relationships with like-minded NGOs, influencers, and advocacy groups in target markets
  • Establish tracking procedures for annual campaigns (seasonal: Ramadan, Qurbani; program specific: Mercy Bakery/Kitchen, Project Uplift) and post-campaign donor engagement that includes newsletters, thank you notes, and sharing of program updates
  • Set realistic fundraising targets for a new organization. Taking into account: needs for recurring donations, brand loyalty to HRD, potential audiences with whom HRDs mission will resonate 
  • Develop in-house knowledge for HRD staff on: social media donor capture and retention
  • Manage relationships with individual major donors, engaging the CEO to meet them with the goal of maintaining donor loyalty 
  • Recommend positions needs to streamline HRDs in-house fundraising activities. These could include: Donor relations manager, social media manager, and others that will reduce HRD’s reliance on external fundraising sources
  • Explore fundraising streams for new prospects and channels for raising HRDs income
  • Lead the creation of a CRM system to capture individual donor information as needed


  • Bachelor’s Degree, Master's degree preferred
  • Track record of high-impact income growth in the NGO sector
  • Understanding of donor capture for faith based NGOs
  • Willingness to travel domestically 10%-25% of the time
  • Some in person work required (10%-20%)
  • Strong interpersonal and intercultural skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication, and highly developed liaison and interpersonal skills
  • Exceptional planning and organizing skills, demonstrated ability to work independently, apply initiative and work under pressure to meet multiple and changing priorities, deadlines and objectives
  • Ability to inspire, lead, and manage staff. Ability to think strategically and make difficult decisions in the face of an extremely difficult working environment
  • Outstanding verbal and written communications skills


  • 5-10 years experience in a similar role
