Position description

This position oversees the Information and Plans Department which is housed in the Strategy Section. The Director of Information is the driving force in overseeing the collection, evaluation, and dissemination of relevant information internally and externally; is a focal point for measurement, evaluation assessment and learning; and guides external communication as aligns with GSD’s mission and strategy. The Information Department supports all GSD internal processes and information flow by constantly evaluating its success, and in this and other regards is critical in key areas supporting all of GSD’s activities.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

INFORMATION 

  • Leads a diverse team of experts in conducting all organizational information gathering, analysis, and sharing activities to support the organization, partners and communities with key and timely information; 
  • Monitors and analyzes humanitarian, development, and community resilience information gathering, analysis, and trends ensuring that the GSD’s activities are fully aligned with sectoral best practices and processes; 

MEAL 

  • Leads the MEAL team in all GSD Monitoring Evaluation Accountability and Learning efforts, promoting a culture of continuous improvement and learning in all aspects of GSD operations; 
  • Oversees all GSD After Action Reviews (AARs) and supports resolution of action items. Coordinates with all relevant departments to ensure lessons learned are incorporated into future GSD activities; 

PLANNING 

  • Oversees the development, execution, and monitoring of all GSD planning activities across departments including development and implementation of planning-focused standard operating procedures (SOPs) for cross-departmental coordination and communication for GSD response and engagement sets; 
  • Leads all efforts to design, operate, staff, and train GSD personnel to effectively operate GSD’s Response center in support of GSD response operations; 

COMMUNICATIONS 

  • Oversee external communication with the media and public, while also working with leadership to build GSD’s brand and position GSD as an agile disaster relief organization; 
  • Supports crisis communications; and developing innovative solutions for telling our story in a variety of ways that attracts attention from a large, diverse media pool and influencer audiences ; 

MANAGEMENT 

  • Supports the professional development and growth of the department team individually and collectively; 
  • Prompt and action GSD’s core values of accountability, humility, and integrity in all work we conduct; 
  • Promote good stewardship of financial and other resources to achieve maximum benefit to those impacted by disaster or at risk of impact; 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Experience: 

  • Eight (8) or more years progressive work experience in the humanitarian, development, or emergency management sectors, working in operations centers or other related areas where information and planning activities help drive organizational effectiveness; 
  • BA/BS in humanitarian affairs, communications, marketing, international relations, public relations or relevant field; and 
  • MA/MS in a relevant field is highly desired.

Knowledge/Skills: 

  • Oversight and quality assurance of data and information collection exercises, data and information management, and analysis. 
  • Critical analysis of information for planning and strategic thinking 
  • Ability to help translate an organization’s strategy and objectives into operational delivery and, at times, respond quickly to changes in short-term priorities; 
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, including presentation ability; 
  • Discernment for confidentiality in relation to organizational, partner, and donor activities and communications; 
  • Technical competence with various software programs, including but not limited to Google Workspace, Trello, and Lucidchart; 
  • Experience working with diverse teams and in multicultural environments both internationally and domestically 
  • Experience working with remote and/or distributed teams; 
  • Experience working within humanitarian, development or 501(c)3 organizations; and 
  • Fluency in written and spoken English required; working knowledge of Spanish or French preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • This role is expected to be in person at our Charlotte, NC location. Potential for remote work based on operational need and internal policies. 50% estimated domestic and international travel and will be expected to be in compliance with GSD’s Immunization Policy.
