About the job
Job summary
Defence’s purpose is to protect the Nation and help it prosper. This role, based in MOD Head Office, sits at the core of delivering that purpose - the Director General Policy and Campaigns will be responsible for the totality of Defence’s political/military international relations activity and the policy oversight of military operations.
Job description
Working to the Permanent Secretary, and together with the Deputy Chief of Defence Staff (Military Strategy & Operations) and DG Industry, Trade and Economic Security, the DG, Policy and Campaigns will provide leadership to the Policy and Campaigns Directorate. Several key Defence thematic priorities are central to this agenda and will require substantial Director General-level leadership focus within Defence, across Government more widely, and with our full range of international partners and stakeholders. You will work very closely with Ministers and senior civilian and military colleagues, the latter responsible for setting military strategy, operational planning, and the conduct of military operations. The role requires considerable cross-Whitehall engagement as Defence ensures that it has a very clear voice in shaping and then delivering the intent of the National Security Council.
Person specification
This is a key leadership role within the Department. It is well suited to a strategic thinker, who is equally able to leverage analysis and stakeholder influence. A sound understanding of how Defence and the wider national security system operates, experience of developing and delivering security/Defence policy in complex environments, and leading teams through change are key attributes we are also looking for.
