Position description

Based in the GPA Office of the President (OoP), the SPO, Leadership Support is responsible for providing day-to-day substantive support to the GPA President. This is a wide-ranging role that will offer exposure to the full range of the division’s work and will draw on a wide range of functional skills. At its core, this role is about helping the GPA President maximize the impact of her internal and external engagements. This role will specifically be responsible for ensuring the President has internal and external context to be highly effective in role; her top priorities are moving forward with appropriate engagement; ensuring effective follow up to internal and external meetings; and coordinating effective engagement with key internal and external partners. This role reports directly to Deputy Director, Leadership Engagement.

What You’ll Do

  • Prepare briefing materials (organization, synthesis and supplementing), agendas, and presentations for internal and external meetings, in coordination with relevant OOP and division staff.
  • Attend meetings with the President where appropriate, take and share notes, summarize key points and coordinate follow up action items with GPA President.
  • Draft and send follow-up emails, letters, and reports to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Maintain a dashboard for GPA President on top priorities and coordinate President engagement – including translating priorities to calendar – to keep all items moving forward on a timely basis.
  • Write presentations and written communication needed for GPA President to effectively conduct the regular business of the division.
  • Support social media and other comms engagements of the GPA President
  • Research and analyze relevant topics, trends, and best practices as requested.
  • Compose internal communications and announcements to keep GPA staff informed about important updates, policies and events related to the GPA Office of the President.
  • Support the GPA President in the Gates Foundation representative board roles
  • Other staff support and special projects as requested.

Your Experience

  • Master's degree in political science, public policy, communications, or related field.
  • At least four years of experience in providing broad-based leadership staffing support in international development or foreign affairs, preferably at the senior level.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritize and multitask.
  • Demonstrated program and partner management skills: successful track record of leading or managing multiple projects simultaneously, ability to coordinate inputs from many people, to track progress against targets and identify barriers to progress, to plan agendas and facilitate meetings that involve group problem-solving.  
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and identify trends and patterns along with solving problems systematically.
  • Experience in creating and managing social media content and campaigns, with knowledge of social media platforms, tools, and analytics.
  • Some communications experience, such as writing press releases, newsletters, blogs, or articles, is an asset.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with a high degree of professionalism and discretion.
  • Passion and interest in GPA’s vision, mission, and goals.
  • Ability to travel with GPA President up to 25% of time as needs dictate.
