About AWIU: American Women for International Understanding (AWIU) was established in 1968 with the mission to build bridges of international understanding through personal exchange and collaboration. AWIU envisions a compassionate and interconnected world with equality for all. Members collaborate to fulfill the mission through a variety of programs including international delegations, grantmaking, local chapter activities, student outreach and mentorship, and, in partnership with the U.S. Department of State, the International Women of Courage Celebration.

Duties

Position Overview: The Executive Director (ED) serves as the chief executive officer of American Women for International Understanding (AWIU) and is responsible for the operational, strategic, and financial performance of the organization. The ED will work closely with the Board of Directors to implement AWIU's mission of promoting mutual understanding and empowering women globally. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in nonprofit management, leadership, and an interest in international understanding. They will share a passion for advancing the rights and opportunities of women around the world. 

Key Responsibilities 

Supporting Membership: Support the work of the members in implementing our mission. Encourage community engagement through innovative programming and membership resources. Collaborate on member-led projects, ensuring they are strategic, align with the mission, and have adequate resources and support. 

Program Support and Oversight: Drive the implementation and evaluation of AWIU’s programs and initiatives, ensuring they are effective, innovative, and aligned with our mission, vision and strategic goals. Foster partnerships with organizations and other stakeholders to enhance program reach and effectiveness. Ensure that all programs are monitored for outcomes and impact, utilizing data-driven decision-making to guide program development. 

Fundraising and Resource Development: Lead execution of comprehensive fundraising strategies and secure diverse funding streams, including grants, donations, corporate sponsorships, and events in coordination with the Development Committee. Cultivate and maintain relationships with donors, foundations, and other funding sources to support AWIU’s financial stability. Collaborate with AWIU members in the planning and execution of fundraising events and campaigns to raise awareness and financial support for AWIU’s work. 

Staff Management: Lead, mentor, and manage a diverse team, fostering a positive and inclusive work environment. Promote a culture of collaboration, innovation, community, and professionalism in line with our values. 

Leadership and Strategic Planning: Coordinate the development and execution of AWIU’s strategic plan, ensuring alignment with our mission, vision, and goals. Provide visionary leadership to staff, members, and stakeholders to advance AWIU’s impact globally. Collaborate with the Board of Directors to develop long-term strategies for growth and sustainability. 

Financial Management and Administration: Manage organizational resources effectively, ensuring efficient operations and the highest level of stewardship of donor funds. In coordination with the Finance Committee, develop the budget and ensure consistent financial oversight. In coordination with the Governance Committee, ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. 

Advocacy and Public Relations: In coordination with the Communications Committee, enhance the visibility and reputation of AWIU through strategic communications, public speaking, and media outreach, when appropriate. Advocate for policies and initiatives that advance AWIU’s mission and the rights of women globally. Serve as a spokesperson for AWIU, representing the organization to the media, government officials, donors, and the public. 

Board Relations: Support the Board in its role of setting policies, providing oversight, and ensuring the long-term success of AWIU. Provide regular updates to the Board on organizational performance, challenges, and opportunities. Work closely with the President to support the Board.

Qualifications

  1. Proven ability to lead and inspire a team, manage complex projects, and work collaboratively with AWIU members and diverse stakeholders. 
  2. Significant experience in a leadership role within a nonprofit organization, with a strong track record of strategic planning, fundraising, and program development. 
  3. Demonstrated experience in international relations, women’s empowerment, or a related field. 
  4. Strong financial acumen, with experience in budgeting and financial reporting. 
  5. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to represent AWIU effectively to a wide range of audiences. 
  6. Leads with AWIU values of understanding, learning, community, and social responsibility. 
  7. Passion for AWIU’s mission and a deep commitment to promoting mutual understanding and empowering women globally. 
  8. Ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed.
