Global Energy Monitor is seeking an experienced Project Manager, Global Wind Power Tracker for our Renewables and Other Power Program.
The Renewables and Other Power team's research program focuses on producing global facility-level datasets that reflect the current and future utility-scale solar, wind, hydropower, geothermal, bioenergy, and nuclear landscapes. The Renewables and Other Power Program publishes the following trackers: Global Solar Power Tracker, Global Wind Power Tracker, Global Hydropower Tracker, Global Geothermal Tracker, Global Bioenergy Power Tracker and the Global Nuclear Power Tracker.
The Challenge
According to the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), we have less than a decade to make massive and unprecedented changes in the global economy to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. To meet that challenge, Global Energy Monitor is creating trackers and other tools to provide detailed information on energy facilities, sponsors, and financing.
About Global Energy Monitor
Global Energy Monitor (GEM) is a network of researchers developing information for the worldwide climate and clean energy movement. Since the organization’s founding in 2007, GEM’s research has become an essential tool for activists, journalists, policymakers, and scientists. GEM’s data and reports are used and cited by organizations ranging from Greenpeace to The Wall Street Journal. GEM’s information is used by Bloomberg Terminals, the International Energy Agency, the IPCC, Climate Analytics, Carbon Tracker Initiative, and hundreds of others.
Location
GEM does not have a central office; instead, GEM works with employees to create suitable home offices catered to the needs of their role. Remote staff do not have to be based in the United States; however, preference will be given to those living in the United States. GEM can hire employees worldwide in countries where our PEO (Deel) operates, except in countries classified as Level 3 or 4 on the U.S. Department of State’s website.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Using and developing spreadsheets, databases, and other software tools to manage tracker data sets and analyze renewable power sources at the regional, national, and international levels.
- Using various global data sources (government websites, company reports, news articles, etc., as well as information from partner organizations) to ensure the tracker represents the most accurate and timely information for each facility.
- Managing tracker update cycle, quality control, data release, and related report writing/presentations.
- Collaborating with other project managers, researchers, and analysts to ensure data consistency and energy-sector wide analyses.
- Training and managing the day-to-day work of GEM researchers working with the tracker.
- Creating, formatting, and updating datasheets and pages on the GEM. wiki platform, both manually and in consultation with the data team and Program Director to automate processes where possible.
- Creating visual presentations of findings using presentation graphics and online tools.
- Working with data visualization specialists and software developers to maintain and develop websites for presenting tracker results.
- Providing miscellaneous editorial support for GEM publications, such as proofreading, data preparation, and development of figures and charts.
- Presenting and discussing research findings at meetings, conferences, hearings, and other public events.
- Writing blogs, articles, briefings, and reports summarizing research findings.
- Developing strong relationships and outreach to partners in NGOs, governments, business organizations, and academia.
- Responding to media inquiries to educate journalists, disseminate GEM data, and advance GEM’s advocacy.
- Monitoring data requests to better understand how GEM data is used, to prepare for funder reporting, or to identify potential follow-ups.
- Analyzing and staying abreast of industry, NGO, media, and governmental data and reports to assess current and emerging trends.
- Assisting third-party researchers in academia, NGOs, governments, and business organizations seeking to use GEM data and analysis.
- Providing support for other Global Energy Monitor projects, including administrative tasks, as needed.
- Using software and computers, such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and operating systems.

Qualifications

The following experience and skills are required for this position:
- 3+ years of experience in energy and/or environmental research.
- Fluency in English.
- Demonstrated analytical experience in the energy sphere, including experience summarizing and presenting quantitative and qualitative data and managing large data sets.
- Professional writing skills.
- Experience coordinating people, projects and resources, ability to work with others effectively.
- Experience networking and building working relationships with external stakeholders and experts, including working with media.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of the environmental and social impacts of energy and materials production and the global political economy of energy/materials generation and procurement.
- Understanding of industry and energy transition issues, and/or relevant technical background.
- Strong research skills, including attention to detail, scrupulous adherence to documented fact, resourcefulness in using search tools.
- Demonstrated previous project management experience: ability to break large projects into timelines, monitor progress towards goals, adjust priorities based on feedback, and meet deadlines.
- ​​Possession of fundamental computer programming and spatial mapping skills.
- Track record of working to advance social and environmental justice.
