The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity.  Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 200 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.

 

The Strategic Technologies Program (STP) conducts research on the critical and emerging technologies that will be key determinants of geopolitical great power competition; analyzes how those technologies will reshape politics, international relations and diplomacy, interstate conflict, economics, security, intelligence, and society; provides explanations of the key underlying drivers and dynamics that will determine which country or countries will be successful in developing and deploying those technologies; and leverages all that information and analysis to provide clear and actionable recommendations for policymakers and the private sector to advance the position of the U.S. and allies and partners in those technologies.  

 

CSIS seeks a Program Coordinator and Research Assistant to support the Strategic Technologies Program. The Program Coordinator and Research Assistant will assist in day-to-day operations, including budget coordination, outreach efforts, event planning, supporting the internship program, and other administrative assistance. The Program Coordinator and Research Assistant will also provide research assistance on substantive projects, co-author reports and analyses with senior staff, and help formulate the Program’s research agenda. This is an in-person position at the CSIS headquarters.

 

The salary band for this position is $55,000-$58,000. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:

Administrative (70%)

• Maintain Program calendars, correspondence, and travel itineraries

• Coordinate event logistics for meetings, conferences, seminars, and briefings

• Draft and edit external correspondence and communications

• Assist in preparation of fundraising proposals and reports to donors

• Acts as a primary liaison for internal programs

• Assist with outreach activities and contacts management 

• Help with the internship program, including recruitment, application review and selection, and intern supervision

• Update web and social media content

• Assist with maintaining financial oversight of the program, including budget monitoring and expense tracking

• Assist with managing day-to-day office operations in-person

Research (30%)

• Conduct research on a diverse range of issues in support of Program projects. Current research projects include but are not limited to: cybersecurity, digital infrastructure, 5G, innovation, blockchain, emerging technologies, and U.S.-China technological competition.

• Research and co-author publications

• Represent the Program by participating in meetings and coordinating on joint projects within CSIS and externally

• Edit, proofread and fact check program materials for internal and external use

• Synthesize complex issues into clear and concise language to ensure program materials are relevant for a global, non-technical audience

 

Qualifications

• Strong academic record with a demonstrated interest in technology policy issues. Competitive applicants should be in their senior year of undergraduate study or already completed a B.A. in a relevant field.

• Demonstrated ability to write clearly and concisely, particularly about technical concepts.

• Demonstrated ability to organize and plan large-scale events and conferences.

• Critical and creative thinking skills. Prior research experience in an independent working environment with tight deadlines preferred.

• Ability to work independently and manage multiple assignments under deadlines effectively.

• Strong professional communication and interpersonal skills.

• Eligible to work in the United States.

• Full-time (35 hours a week) preferred. Flexibility around class schedules offered as needed.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK CONDITIONS:

 

This position will be a hybrid that will require 2-3 days a week in the office.
