Position description

Oxfam America, an international development and humanitarian aid organization, is seeking an enthusiastic Extractive IndustriesPolicy Intern to work in its Washington, DC office this fall.  Oxfam advocates for just government policies and corporate practices in the oil, gas, and mining industries, and supports the right of communities to participate meaningfully in decisions about the development of natural resources.

This full-time paid internship runs from September 25 through December 22. The intern will support research and advocacy aimed at influencing the policies of corporations, governments and international financial institutions related to contract and revenue transparency and community consultation and consent. The intern will also support advocacy campaigns in specific Oxfam countries aimed at ensuring extractive and tax revenues are well managed for the benefit of local communities. The internship provides a unique opportunity to support Oxfam campaigns and gain experience in policy analysis and issue-based research, while also getting exposure and providing support to Oxfam’s expanding extractive industries program, which now works in 30 countries.

The intern will support Oxfam’s extractive industries Right to Know, Right to Decide campaign priorities. This campaign aims to:

  • Ensure strong implementation of the US extractive industry transparency law (Dodd-Frank Act Section 1504);
  • Support campaigns in other markets for strong implementation of similar laws;
  • Encourage companies, governments to disclose contracts; and
  • Encourage companies and government to promote increased engagement of local communities impacted by oil andmining projects in decision making, including though Free, Prior, and Informed Consent processes.


  • Conduct research on the corporate policies and country-level operations and disclosure of extractive industry companies, as well as international financial institutions. 
  • Develop high-quality and professional inputs for use in Oxfam research reports and briefings, and materials for public dissemination. 
  • Support program coordination and event management and logistics as needed.
  • Support internal and external communications, such as the team newsletter, blogs, etc.


  • Bachelor's or master's degree (or degree in progress) in development, economics, business, international relations, political science, or a related field
  • Knowledge of the field of international development and human rights
  • Knowledge of oil, gas and/or mining issues
  • Experience researching, developing and editing written material on a tight deadline
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills; ability to prioritize workload and multi-task
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and under pressure
  • Accuracy and strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a team or independently as needed
  • Proficiency with MS Office suite
