RRI’s Alternative Tenure and Enterprise Models (ATEMs) thematic program is intended to support the development and mainstreaming of economic development models that respect and strengthen the rights and livelihoods of Indigenous Peoples and local communities in the forested areas of developing countries. Within the broader mandate of the ATEMs program, RRI has catalyzed the creation of the Interlaken Group, an informal network of individual leaders from influential companies, investors, government, and international organizations. The purpose of the Group is to expand and leverage the financial and political capital of companies and investors to support secure land rights in the developing world. The Interlaken Group is co‚Äźchaired by RRI and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and has rapidly become the leading “precompetitive” mechanism to leverage private sector action to support secure land rights in the developing world. RRI’s growing private sector engagement portfolio consists of a suite of activities spanning Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, and Southeast Asia.

Senior Associate, ATEMs Program:

The Senior Associate is responsible for helping guide RRI’s ATEMs Program under the guidance of the RRI Associate Director, Private Sector. The Senior Associate will be responsible for linking the strategic goals of the ATEMS program to regional and global operating plans. The Senior Associate will handle details carefully without compromising attention to big-picture goals. The Senior Associate will be flexible to work in a highly dynamic environment while ensuring that the work is completed within established deadlines. A collegial and cheerful demeanor is essential.

The Senior Associate will lead specific components of the Coalition’s efforts to leverage private sector support for community land rights to drive more inclusive economic development in the developing world. The Senior Associate coordinates activity across the Interlaken Group and RRI’s broader private sector engagement portfolio. The Senior Associate will lead elements of collaboration with other thematic (Gender, Climate, Tenure Tracking, etc.) and regional programs in delivering programmatic outcomes.

The Senior Associate must develop a thorough understanding of, and be a voice for, the RRI/RRG—a skill acquired through demonstrated effective work in the organization. The individual must be ready to exercise judgment, discretion, and ownership of responsibilities expected from the Senior Associate, based on the overall guidance provided by the Associate Director.

This position is a full-time position based in Washington, DC for a term of one year. It is classified as exempt under the US Fair Labor Standards Act.

Essential Job Functions:

ATEMS Program (80% of time)

  • Develop strategies and plans to coordinate activity across ATEMs team, international experts, and RRI Coalition to scope, initiate, and coordinate Interlaken Group engagement in priority countries in Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia.
  • Represent RRI and the Interlaken Group and deliver effective messages and presentations in relevant forums.
  • Oversee meeting planning and execution, including all logistical, travel, administrative, and research support to meetings and events held at national, regional, and global levels, including ensuring successful international Interlaken Group events.
  • Coordinate the work and take ownership of the outcomes for RRI Regional efforts of RRI Coalition members to engage and influence the private sector.
  • Author high-quality and relevant analytical briefings and project updates as input to RRI publications, reports, planning process, RRI website, RRI quarterly email updates, and monthly meetings reports, ensuring the ATEMs program’s contributions to RRI are captured in institutional communications and outreach
  • Organize high level meetings of private sector, CSO, government, and community leaders to deliver results.
  • Liaise directly with corporate, investor, and CSO members to maintain engagement of Interlaken Group.
  • Lead continuous improvement of the Interlaken Group website, including periodic updates to functionality and design.
  • Support development of donor proposals; contribute to M&E process and reporting, ensuring documents are prepared on time to reflect the program’s impacts and the decisions of the ATEMS program, Interlaken Group and coalition.
  • Ensure effective and efficient ATEMS program administration, adhering to RRI administrative protocol and deadlines by proactively and independently communicating internally and externally and resolving issue directly using independent judgment or, where available, established protocols.
  • Directly manage consultants and/or temporary staff.
  • Compile and manage data, draft communications to stakeholders, draft reports, and provide general support to the project team and consultants.
  • Mentor junior Associates and other staff and willingly undertake other tasks as requested.

RRI Institution-wide Activities including advancing work on Strategic Themes (20% time)

  • Each Senior Associate is expected to devote up to 20% of their time to the overall institutional needs of RRG, including both contributions to strategic analysis or networking support for one of the four priority themes (Gender, Rights and Climate, Realizing Rights, and Tenure Tracking) and support to institution-wide functions, such as Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E), Coalition and Strategic Networks or Communications, including support to the appropriate member of the RRG Management Team as needed, as coordinated with the Associate Director, ATEMS.

Strategic Analysis and Background Research (15%)

  • Carry out secondary literature reviews or background research for regions or thematic areas regarding the presence and relevant investment work of international, national, and regional institutions, private sector, civil society or political and legal trends.
  • Provide support related to a strategic theme of intellectual interest, carrying out research or strategic analysis, authoring position papers, providing critical comments on analysis created by RRI Partners and Collaborators, collecting and disseminating relevant publications, articles, news and analyses, supporting networking activities of RRI Partners and Collaborators.
  • Provide support to organization of networking events, including exchanges across regions and thematic areas.

Institution-Wide Support (5%)

  • Provide support to the appropriate member(s) of the Management Team on institution-wide functions as requested, including correspondence with Partners and Collaborators to build the Coalition, support to develop and execute on plans for the Strategic Proposal III guiding framework, author or edit narrative reports to Partners and Coalition, and support planning and monitoring, including the Independent Monitor.
  • Project manage and/or author donor proposals, concept letters, grant applications, interim or final narrative reports to support institutional-wide fundraising activities.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or Bachelor’s degree plus relevant land-tenure or private sector work experience required. Educational degrees with a focus on business, economics, natural resource management, or related social science strongly preferred.
  • At least 3-5 years of work experience with International NGOs, development institutions or civil sector organizations preferred.
  • Prior work with the private sector on forestry and agriculture supply chains is strongly preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of natural resource tenure and/or private sector issues preferred.
  • Exceptional and demonstrated writing and research skills; Ability to communicate complex ideas effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills and attention to detail with the ability to prioritize competing demands and projects in the short and long term.
  • Demonstrated leadership of projects and/or teams, including management of independent consultants/researchers.
  • Strong communication, and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work with people in a multicultural environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
  • Professional fluency in French, Spanish, or other relevant language is very strongly desired.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment, with the flexibility to work independently in a highly dynamic environment.
  • Initiative and ability for self-directed, independent work.
  • Strong computer skills (specifically Microsoft Word and Excel).
  • Analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Experience living/working abroad preferred.
  • Ability to travel up to 20% of the year.
