Position description

Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking an Associate to provide administrative and research assistance to the Conflict and Crisis Division. This position is based in one of our major offices in Europe (Berlin, Paris, Brussels or London) or in our Beirut office and reports to the Director of the Crisis and Conflict Division, based in Beirut.

The Crisis and Conflict Division documents, exposes, and advocates to end violations of human rights and the laws of war during armed conflicts, humanitarian disasters, and severe social or political unrest. The team also works on issues such as climate change and forced migration that can drive conflict. We investigate how measures that countries deploy in the name of security – such as overbroad counterterrorism laws and mass surveillance technologies – can undermine human rights. We bring attention to under-reported crises, highlight the plight of marginalized people, advance rights-respecting legal norms, and press for justice to protect and promote human rights.


1. Provide administrative support to the director of the division and Crisis and Conflict researchers such as scheduling, making travel arrangements, preparing for and taking minutes at meetings, creating and maintaining extensive filing and archiving systems, word processing, photocopying, filing, answering phones, processing incoming mail and processing departmental finances and payments;

2. Respond to requests for information and maintain communication among HRW offices, global staff, and external partners;

3. Prepare, edit, format and distribute materials such as news releases, advocacy letters, reports, briefing papers, op eds, publications, agendas, emails, and web content;

4. Provide research assistance to staff in the division;

5. Attend advocacy meetings or briefings and liaise with affiliated organizations and international entities;

6. Assist with logistics for events such as news conferences, staff meetings, and special events;

7. Coordinate and manage the development of content for fundraising newsletters, mailings, programs, presentations, and special events;

8. Assist with tracking and acknowledging donations and donor communications;

9. Assist with the recruitment onboarding, and mentoring of interns and volunteers; and

10. Carry out other duties as required.


Education: A bachelor’s degree in human rights, international relations, social sciences, or a related field is required.

Experience: Minimum of one year of experience working in an office environment or assisting in remote or field research is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Ability to multi-task effectively, including having good planning and organizing skills and ability to work well under pressure are required.

2. Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with external partners are required.

3. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required; proficiency in other languages is desirable.

4. Strong initiative and follow-through, the capacity to think creatively and strategically, excellent writing and editing skills, and a dynamic public speaking ability are required.

5. Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions is required.

6. Experience working for an international human rights organization in a support function is highly desirable.
