Position description

Saint Louis University, a Catholic, Jesuit institution dedicated to student learning, research, health care and service, is seeking applicants for a visiting non-tenure-track position in journalism. This position in the Department of Communication is for the 2020/2021 academic year and is non-renewable. The position will start August 2020.

Duties include teaching four journalism and media-related courses each semester in the department’s core and upper-division undergraduate curriculum. Candidates need to be able to teach foundational level writing for print, online and broadcast platforms as well as basic video and audio production. The person in this position will teach courses such as Media and Society, Journalism News Writing, Feature Writing, Multiplatform Journalism, Digital Storytelling, and Analysis of Popular Culture.

Requirements: Documented teaching experience and excellence and ability to effectively mentor students. M.A. required, Ph.D. preferred. Additional consideration will be given to individuals who also have a record of professional experience in journalism.

Communication is a thriving department in the College of Arts and Sciences, with about 170 undergraduate majors, 20 minors, 20 M.A. students, and 13 full-time faculty members. We have an undergraduate curriculum that stresses both the theoretical understanding and professional application of communication research within three different concentrations: journalism and media studies; integrated strategic communication; and communication studies. We stress proficiency in production/technology across our curriculum. We also emphasize cultural competence and ethical reflection. The department has a communication media center, studio production suite and several computer labs to support student learning related to technology and production.

Saint Louis University serves approximately 13,000 students. The main campus is in an ethnically diverse city neighborhood that features a major performing-arts district and a wide array of cultural institutions.
