Position description

Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 130 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyzes action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with UN Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community.

The position is located in the UNDRR Office in Bonn, Germany. The incumbent reports to the Head of the Content and Channels Unit.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the incumbent will carry out the following duties and responsibilities:

• Contributes to the development of UNDRR’s social media strategy and coordinate its implementation.
- Develops and maintains UNDRR’s social media content calendar; Researches, generates, edits and posts contents, text, photos, captions, infographics and short videos on UNDRR social media and corporate websites in support of UNDRR campaigns and overall communication strategy.
- Provides online communication support for key events and meetings, including featuring related materials on the social media platforms or websites, and live streaming and posting, moderating when appropriate.
- Serves as community manager for UNDRR social media accounts. Monitors and moderates comments on social media posts, intervening as appropriate to answer questions and guide the conversation.
- Keeps regular contact and liaises with UNHQ and other UN agencies, funds and programmes and UNDRR partners on topics related to social media and digital campaigning.

• Liaises with consultants and external vendors working on social media planning, asset management, content production, graphic design or other elements to be posted on UNDRR social media.

• Supports the five UNDRR Regional Offices in the development and maintenance of their regional social media accounts.
- Regularly reviews social media platforms of regional offices for corporate compliance and provides support on social media best practices.
- Develops and conducts learning programmes on social media for account managers.
- Maintains UNDRR’s content asset platforms and files.

• Monitors analytics and reports on the effectiveness of social media channels.

• Responds to a variety of inquiries and information requests internally and externally; prepares related correspondence.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent degree) in communication, marketing, public relations, media or information technologies or related field is required. A first level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in social media, public information, journalism, communication, media affairs, campaigns or events of public interest, or related area is required.

Experience in producing social media content and managing institutional accounts is required.

Experience with video editing tools is required.

Experience with graphic editing tools is required.

Experience in disaster risk reduction, sustainable development, humanitarian affairs or climate change is desirable.

Experience working in an international organization is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the two working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Fluency in another UN official language is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by a competency-based interview.
