Position description

Telling the story of the Air Force Reserve and serving as the official channel for both internal and external communications are responsibilities of Public Affairs officers. They have to be adept at both written and verbal communications, skilled in dealing with all forms of media from traditional broadcast networks to social media and always vigilant that information provided does not jeopardize national security.

Specific Tasks:

  • Develop liaison and working relationships with media representatives, civilian organizations, government agencies as well as Reserve and active duty units 
  • Plan communications to ensure military and civilian members are informed about current issues and policies of the local installation, major command and HQ USAF 
  • Direct program activity of Armed Forces Radio and Television service 
  • Direct operation of base newspapers, websites and other communications channels 
  • Plan communication strategies to correct misunderstandings, problems or friction that may develop

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree; undergraduate academic specialization is desirable in mass or public communication, communicative arts, journalism, public relations, international relations, national security, advertising, or one of the behavioral sciences (sociology or social psychology) 
  • Commission as an officer in the Air Force Reserve
  • Ability to present ideas and facts in written and oral form, clearly and convincingly, is mandatory
  • A valid state driver’s license to operate government motor vehicles
  • No record of disciplinary action (Letter of Reprimand [LOR] or Article 15) for:
    • Failure to exercise sound leadership principles, especially with respect to morale or welfare of subordinates
    • Engaging in an unprofessional or inappropriate relationship as defined in AFI 36-2909
    • Taking or failing to take action in situations, thereby exhibiting a lack of integrity
    • A violation of Article 107, false official statements
  • No convictions by a general, special or summary courts-martial
  • Never been convicted by a civilian court of a Category 1, 2, or 3 offense, nor exceeded the accepted number of Category 4 offenses. Category 3 and 4 traffic offenses alone are not disqualifying.
  • No recorded evidence of substance abuse, emotional instability, personality disorder, or other unresolved mental health problems
  • Eligibility for a Secret security clearance

Training:

  • For those without a prior military service commission, successful completion of the nine week Officer Training School at Maxwell AFB, AL is required
