Position description

A start-up think thank is seeking a full-time director of research to begin by May 1, 2017.

A start-up think tank in Washington, DC, that specializes in the affairs of Arabian Peninsula, with a particular focus on Saudi Arabia, is seeking an experienced director of research who can lead the organization’s growing research department and oversee its various analytical products. The candidate must be able to supervise and coordinate the production of quality analytical work, overseeing both in-house and contractual researchers. The director of research will be a forward-thinking individual who can plan ahead and pitch creative ideas to ensure that the think tank’s material is both timely and widely read.  



  • Master’s degree in political science with at least five years of practical experience examining political and economic issues facing the Gulf region and/or the Middle East; PhD preferred;
  • Demonstrated experience publishing articles in top academic journals and other print media;
  • Experience leading or participating in panels, conferences, and other events involving the DC think tank community;
  • Excellent knowledge of English; knowledge of Arabic a plus;
  • Capacity to work productively and contribute across different teams;
  • Ability to multitask and adapt to a constantly changing workflow;
  • Ability to work nights and weekends when needed;
  • Strong background in and understanding of the Gulf and/or the greater Middle East.
