Position description

The Head of IIE – India will provide leadership to IIE’s office in New Delhi, represent IIE to key audiences and stakeholders and lead business development efforts in India with foundations, governments, corporations and higher education institutions. This individual will provide program and compliance oversight for programs and operations in the office and develop a culture of collaboration and commitment to IIE’s mission. The role provides an exciting opportunity to strengthen IIE’s visibility and relationships in India.

Over its nearly 100-year history, IIE has become the world leader in international education, managing an annual portfolio of approximately $400 million in revenue and trusted to administer flagship programs on behalf of the U.S. Government, leading foundations and corporations, and government partners around the world.

IIE has been engaged with higher education in India for over 60 years and has had an office in New Delhi since 2005. In the country, we manage a rich portfolio of programs that include scholarship and teacher training programs with leading companies like Cargill and Verizon, outreach to talented students on behalf of some of the world’s most prestigious universities and fellowship programs, and efforts to internationalize Indian higher education. The focus areas of these programs have included girls’ and women’s education (especially related to science and engineering); public health; and leadership development. Current operations include 11 team members in New Delhi, with an annual operating budget of US$ 1.46 million. 

The Head of IIE India will develop a clear and targeted business plan for the office that identifies areas of business growth and opportunity, especially with the technology and higher education sectors; work with IIE’s research and evaluation experts to raise IIE’s profile in the country; and develop a clear plan for the office’s operations, including local registration status. The Head also maintains important institutional relationships with representatives of the U.S. and Indian governments and international counterparts based in New Delhi.

Essential Functions

Leads business development and regional representation. Develops annual and quarterly plan for regional business development, including planning and opportunity identification and securing strategic partners and personnel throughout South Asia. Identifies opportunities within the region in coordination with headquarters program development teams. Represents and promotes IIE with sponsors, funders, and partners, including university contacts, national education agencies, government and embassy representatives. Develops and implements activities that highlight IIE’s research and expertise to the media, government, higher education and philanthropic sectors.

  • Provides office leadership in order to meet or exceed department annual goals for revenue generation, new business, and gross margin as part of contribution to IIE’s overall annual business plan. Recruits, retains and implements people management programs, meeting specific annual objectives.
  • Provides program leadership and compliance oversight. Complies with applicable contract and sponsor requirements and follows all IIE policies and procedures. Provides technical input into US Government (e.g., U.S. Department of State/Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), U.S. Embassy, etc.); host country government agency; foundation; corporate; and other sponsor-funded education, scholarships, and leadership-related projects. Provides guidance and supervision of office budgeting and ensures that financial matters are managed in accordance with sponsor and IIE requirements and international best practices. Works closely with project managers to monitor implementation and to ensure the timely completion and submission of all contractually-required deliverables.
  • Develops and implements a communications and marketing strategy to advance IIE’s identity and visibility and promote relationships with external and internal audiences. Develops marketing vehicles to raise awareness of IIE India

Job Requirements

Education and Work Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in order to apply a working knowledge of the theories and principles in a specialized field or work discipline.
  • Requires at least ten years of related work experience.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Minimum three (3)years of work experience in India required, 5 years preferred. 
  • Familiarity with U.S. higher education system and education systems in India.
  • Experience overseeing organizational budgets required. 
  • Demonstrated success in proposal development and attracting new funding for education and/or training programming, effective client relations, and quality program implementation. 
  • Excellent communication skills in English required. Familiarity with one or more major Indian languages preferred. 
  • Track record of working effectively with range of stakeholders in the India context. 
  • Cultural sensitivity and ability to engage and motivate international team members. 
  • Overseas educational experience or other global experience preferred, but not required.
  • Excellent critical thinking skills and judgment. Demonstrated ability to resolve problems and initiate enhancements through technology, research, and networking skills among organizational teams. In-depth knowledge of sponsor/client standards and guidelines.
