SOS Children's Villages-USA is a nonprofit organization based in Washington, DC that raises funds for SOS Children's Villages International. These funds go to over 500 SOS villages in 133 countries around the world to provide permanent, loving homes for orphaned or abandoned children. Each home is part of a village, and each child has a loving mother -- often for the first time in his or her life. Beyond creating and sustaining villages, SOS also supports emergency relief, schools, social programs and medical facilities worldwide.
SOS interns play a vital part in the success of our organization. Internships are unpaid positions within our Washington, D.C. office. All candidates must be available for at least 3 months and a minimum of 20 hours/week. Credit hours can be provided if applicable. We are currently seeking applicants for the following areas:
Administrative Intern: Supports activities of the CEO and Administration Department. Duties include but are not limited to communicating with donors, conducting research, and file management. Strong communication skills, good work ethic, and desire to learn in a fast-paced environment are important. Ideal for individuals pursuing a future in fundraising or administration, global development and international affairs.
Advocacy Intern: Supports the Manager of Government Relations & Advocacy in conducting research on pressing policy and child rights issues, drafting content for advocacy materials, and developing policy tracking tools for emerging advocacy issues, among other tasks. Ideal for individuals pursuing a future in advocacy, public policy or international affairs. (We are no longer accepting applications for this internship position at this time.)
Communications/Public Relations Intern: Supports the Marketing and Communications Team with research, development of media materials, social media content, and more. The intern will need to quickly learn about SOS's mission and work around the world, have excellent written and oral communications skills, and be comfortable with social media. Ideal for individuals pursuing a future in journalism, communications, international relations or related fields. Design skills desired but not required.
Community Outreach & Special Campaigns: Supports the External Relations Department by assisting in relationship building with potential partners including schools/universities and other groups, growing the SOS brand by tabling at local events, and assisting with research, developing marketing/promotional materials, and online/offline communications including managing social media. Ideal for individuals pursuing a future in community organizing and outreach.
Corporate Partnerships Intern: Support the Corporate Partnerships department on a variety of projects to help secure funding from both large companies and small businesses. Projects will include conducting background research on potential donors, creating written materials about SOS Children's Villages' work around the world, drafting email communications to corporate partners, and providing administrative support to the department, including data entry. Strong writing and communications skills are required.
Database Intern: Supports the Data Team in all aspects of data/information systems management, constituent relationship management (CRM), and data analysis. Learn and use the ROI (Revolution Online) database while developing systems and procedures. Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and an interest in databases are required. Database experience a plus. A successful candidate will be detail-oriented and able to think analytically.
Digital Marketing Internship - Content and Technical Intern: Supports the Digital Team by developing and proposing content ideas for the website, social media, blog, and donation forms. Will gain experience with "behind the scenes" technical work, including HTML and CSS coding. Will develop and execute materials for the website, social media channels, email communications, online promotion and other areas. Ideal for individuals pursuing a future in marketing, communications, journalism, systems or a related field.
Direct Marketing Intern: Supports the Direct Marketing Team with activities that include researching stories, pictures, and statistics for communications and appeals, writing assignments, data entry, acknowledgments, newsletters, and analysis to support direct mail fundraising. Ideal for individuals pursuing a future in marketing, communications, journalism or a related field.
Donor Stewardship Intern: Support the Donor Stewardship Coordinator by assisting with letter-writing, research, mailings and registration processing. Will learn how to use ROI database software to set up records, process gifts, and run performance reports. Assist the Stewardship Coordinator with donor and sponsor cultivation.
Major Gift Research Intern: Supports the Major Gift team in identification, qualification and ranking of new prospective individual donors. Will assist in developing research profiles on prospective individual donors to be used to prepare for donor meetings, discussion of cultivation strategies and determination of solicitation approaches. Will participate in relationship mapping of existing and new individual donors to help identify opportunities to maximize fundraising potential. Will also provide regular administrative support in managing donor information in internal databases. Ideal for candidates interested in research and/or strategic major gift fundraising. Strong writing, research and analytical skills required.
Multimedia Intern: Support the Marketing Team by developing and enhancing the visual identity in projects ranging from communications, fundraising and donor relationship online through editing and creating videos, images and visual content that can be used for our website, social media channels, email communications, online promotion and other areas. Ideal for individuals pursuing graphic design, multimedia or related areas of studies.
