Position description

We’re seeking a seasoned journalist who has impeccable judgment and who thrives on deadline pressure to become the linchpin of the National Desk’s breaking news operation.

You need to be able to synthesize feeds from colleagues who are standing in floodwater up to their knees, or wiping tear gas out of their eyes, and draft a news story (or update a live briefing) that brings readers to the scene and goes beyond a mere recitation of the facts to include analytical insights. You should also be engaged on social media, and equally comfortable writing a lede-of-the-paper news story full of Timesian sweep as a conversational explainer that is impossible to ignore on the phone.

This is a job for someone who has been out in the field, anchoring big news stories under trying conditions, and now wants to help make sense of this tumultuous country from New York. Unlike National correspondents who live out of suitcases, you will not have much baked-in travel with this job and will be able to work from home on occasion. You must be collegial, of course, and experience as an editor is a plus. Because news is not always breaking, we want someone with a knack for thinking up attention-getting projects of your own making.

To apply, please outline your experience and vision for the position on Workday.

This is a Guild position.

If you are an an active employee at The New York Times or any affiliates (excluding INYT), please do not apply here. Go to the Career Worklet on your Workday home page and View "Find Internal Jobs". Thank you!
