This post is located in the Convention on Biological Diversity, Mainstreaming, Cooperation and Outreach Division (MCO). Under the overall supervision of the Head of the MCO Division and the direct supervision of the Head of the Communication Unit, the incumbent will perform the following duties:
1. Provide support to corporate and external communications and outreach including the following: i) Support the development of communications campaigns to raise the profile of biodiversity and the Biodiversity Convention including through social media and other innovative communication, public relations and marketing tools; ii) Contribute to the communications activities of the Executive Secretary including speech writing, production of written statements and high level content, social media, and other related activities; iii) Create and disseminate social media content relating to the work of the Convention using the social media platforms of the Secretariat; iv) Provide strategic guidance and implement a social media strategy that increases the reach of these platforms; v) Provide input for raising the visibility of the Biodiversity Convention through public relations and marketing activities. 2. Provide support to Parties to the Convention for implementation of the Programme of Work for Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA), Decision XIII/22 and the awareness-raising strategy of the Nagoya Protocol, including through: i) Development of new and innovative communication capacity development tools and activities; ii) Dissemination and refinement of tools, particular, the CEPA and Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) - awareness-raising toolkits; iii) Support communications and public awareness work to be undertaken with partner organizations in the context of any memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed, including inter alia, the organization of meetings and workshops, drafting of communication materials, organization of events and by supporting partners to implement agreed activities; and iv) Develop, by drafting materials, writing scripts, creating info graphics, new and innovative communication products and tools for target audiences, including, inter alia: business, Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs), youth, actors in other sectors. 3. Perform other related duties as required.

Advanced university degree in journalism, communications, marketing and public relations, and/or international relations, environmental affairs, management, political science is required. A first level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
A minimum of five years of experience working in the communications and/or marketing and public relations field on issues related to environment and sustainable development, corporate development, is required. Proven track record of results-oriented delivery of communications strategies and products is desirable. Proven experience in organizing and running communication and marketing campaigns, preferably on environment and sustainable development topics is desirable. Ability to effectively and concisely communicate global nature and biodiversity policy and its relationship to other global environmental and sustainable development agendas to a variety of target audiences is desirable. Established track record of maintaining effective and pro-active media relations and mobilizing the media. Excellent speechwriting and messaging skills for executive communication is desirable. In-depth knowledge of strategic communications methodologies and techniques, along with evidence of successful ability to design and implement impactful communications and marketing campaigns and events are desirable. Excellent writing skills, mastery of visual and oral communication technologies and techniques are required.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in written and oral English is required. Fluency and knowledge of other UN languages is a strong asset.
